My research on what this pata potea SMS games are earning.
Charges for SMS range from 50 to 20 bob.
The last winner of the Range Rover used 60,000/- (From an equity bank loan) texting. Note this was a random pick.
When I listen to radio in the morning, most winners particularly for the pata pesa promotion claim to have used thousands, I therefore decided to do my own synovate on this phenomenon.

I queried 21 people I know. One out of every three people admitted (some of course lied) to playing these games (average 700 so far). Out of this third, 8 admitted to spending more than one thousand (average 3 thousand so far) on the games; the rest all played a few hundred bob.

I extrapolated this to the general population of assumed 20million subscribers. I eliminated half of the users (to get a most pessimistic result), and used 10million.

Of ten million, 38% of 3.3million are playing an average of 3k = (3,300,000 * 3000 * 38)/100
3.7Billion Shillings

Of ten million, 62% of 3.3million are playing an average of 700 + (3,300,000 * 700 * 62)/100
14.2Billion Shillings

Bringing a Total of 18billion in collections (1billion to phone companies and advertising and 4 billion taxes and other cost)

People pocket 13billion and give out “prizes” worth 100million (Cash prizes and some second hand Toyota vitz e.t.c )

100mill/13000mill * 100 = 0 .76% of earnings to gamblers (KES 100mill)
They Pocket 99.24% (13Billion) of earnings as PAT (on the low side)

You fleece Kenyans like that and they won't complain

I agree this is conmanship of the highest order but the numbers you use are suspect. You have started off from 20 million subscribers - this number is so wrong considering that personally I have 2 Safcom lines, 2 Airtel lines, 1 Orange and 1 Yu line (I dont even know where all these lines now smile as I only use 2 of them. The point is that most of these lines are not active.

You have then discounted the 20 million to 10 million.

I suggest that you start with about 12 million active lines, discount this to about 3 million being the people are willing to be conned and work from there. The conned amount is still tidy though.

good idea ,'fleezing kenyans and make them gamblers',this is another bussines doing well.chosing 6nos. out of 49. and win 20m,how do they cook this game is what i dont understand,What may be you are not aware is that a ticket played by customer and it is not entered in there system PTT machine, chances of winning are 80% and for them to be on the safer side they have to put in the media or contact the player to inform that the ticket will not participate in the draw.

@mpenzi, if you do not use your line for 1 month it is pulled out of the subscriber base. We have 40million Kenyans (plus a few cooperates and non Kenyans), i believe more than 1/4 have a permanent line (some two permanent lines like me), sio? that is still around 10million, i think that figure is fair.

This's a case of, "tamaa mbele mauti nyuma", coz that's where most of who participate in these schemes end up!!!
