During the recently concluded Nairobi Show at the agriculture ministry section I came across a guy who was doing a demo on strawberry farming and was really impressed by this kind of farming.

He was giving a demo on how profitable this biz is. For starters he was encouraging guys to use a raised bed of 12X12 foot area where the initial investment will cost around Kshs. 45000 this includes insecticides, fertilizer and the stems will be provided by the fellow.(In fact at Kshs. 100 he was giving some manuals and some stems of the s/berry for starters).
Now about the returns- after approximately 6 months and this includes a phase where the first buds are pruned to allow the plant to mature, he was saying that after the 6 mths every Monday and Friday one can harvest btw 10-15 kgs. The market price of the s/berry are packed in 250gms packs at the supermarket going for arnd Kshs.200 per pack depending on where you shop. This harvest period is for a minimum of 2 years.This translates to approx. Kshs. 6000 (using the 10Kg) per harvest or Kshs.12000 per week for the duration.(Of course not taking into the cost of packaging material and assuming a selling price of Kshs. 150)

Anyone who has undertaken this type of farming to verify? I misplaced the brochures that this guy gave but the idea has been boggling my mind.

I'm curious about this. I was also at the show and saw this stand.

After the tomato project is on the road, might embark on this one..

@ Mwafrika, I've tried to locate the fellow thro Kameme Fm as he had been on air earlier but the customer care guys there are not being helpful.I talked to a lady by the name of Lucy who promised to call me but has not done so to date. If there's someone who knows a person working with Regional Reach (an associate company of Kameme) it may open up the contacts.

In the meantime am still looking for the guys using other means.

@ tuvok,the beauty about this project is that you are not supposed to use a green house.This is because s/berry uses cross pollination unlike say tomatoes that are self pollinating.

Clarification;
Is he making, from 1.5 acres, K.shs. 30,000 per month or per day? If it is per month, isn't the return low for 1.5 acres?
