Exhilarating, Exciting!!! True mark of a champion. Saving the best for that last knockout sprint in the end!!!!! He is back!!! One of the sporting worlds greatest rivalries Wanjiru - Kebede. A pure pleasure to watch. Beijing Olympic 2008, London 2009, Chicago Marathon 2010. http://www.nbcchicago.co...o_Marathon_Chicago.html
GG, What say you? Do you think that world record looks likely in Dubai in January?

...and cashes the $$$$ like a nonsense.
"Kebede would need to finish second or better in New York to overtake Wanjiru for the World Marathon Major Series title and the $500,000 prize"
haki ya nani...if i could only coopt some g4s employees for a lucrative, short term project...

Wow... Amazing indeed... with about 1.5kms to go... and Kes 40m at stake. This was a labourer showing up to earn a living - you need to take a second to watch it! And it looked like Kebedi had taken it. But that last bell and Wanjiru took off - but no Kebede recovered and pulled away again until the last stretch, when they reached the second last bend, Uphill. Sammy Wanjiru took off! He went so far ahead it was difficult to believe they were running side by side a second ago! The crowd had to respect the guts, courage, stamina - and the crowed bowed in respect to the champion. Excellence you see, must be admired! http://www.athleticos.org/cover...at-2010-Chicago-Marathon

I'd need to see our own principles - yours and mine - tested to believe how patriotism would come before Kes 40m shillings. Kenya's flag was flying high in Chicago yesterday. Realise there's no theft, crime, or other untoward activity we're talking about here!

I find it rather strange when people see a performance like Wajiru's and their mind gravitate to the money. He deserves the reward certainly, but let us recognize talent and the sheer hard work it takes to get there. Consider: 1. For Wanjiru and Kebede to put in the performance they did they would have run an average of about 200K in training, every week, for sixteen weeks. 2. To win a marathon in 2 hours six minutes you have to run every kilometer in under 3 minutes, 42 times. Ergo, this is not a two hour job. And the man still has the energy to wave and blow kisses at the crowd. Amazing! It was thrilling finish all the same. It reminds me of the Boston Marathon in 2008 where the dueling Kenyan and Ethiopian girls were separated by less than a second at the end. "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. Here is the link: Wanziru Making Loads of CashAnd even if Tsegaye Kebede decides to participate in the New York Marathon he has to hope and pray that Wanziru doesn't. Is a month enough to rest and prepare between two marathons? Anyone with facts? Why would we assume that Kedebe might participate and wanziru decide not to? Never count on making a good sale. Would you consider Rudisha to be unpatriotic because he decided to give Delhi a miss after smashing the 800 metres world record? Wanjiru already won the Gold medal for Kenya (OK - for himself as well) at the Beijing Olympics. Commonwealth Games are also used as a platform for other (young) talent to emerge, so many star sportsmen and women (although not all) give them a miss.

Then after that look your kids in the eye and tell them they are having a gold medal for dinner!!! Wanjiru has done more for Kenya than you'll ever do!!! He won a gold medal for Kenya in the Olympics - the biggest ever stage for an athlete - and the first ever Gold in a marathon - and you are yapping about him giving the Delhi games a miss. Get real my brother! Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

I don't have a problem with guys earning earning gazillions even when they skip service to the country. Let them earn it. Why should Kshs 40m go to Addis Ababa? Leta hii pesa hapa Nairobi bana. @Mwenza, I wonder what the country will give to the medal winners. Great men are not always wise, neither do the aged understand judgement...

@ Mwenza You have to realise that Wanjiru running and winning the marathon is a patriotic duty. Kenya has a reputation of having great long distance runners and wanjiru went to prove that. Kenya has an abundance of talent and the common wealth games is a good chance to develop our new and emerging talents. The athletes representing us at the common wealth want to have their face on the world map. Running in the common wealth games gives them an opportunity to represent Kenya and have their names and faces out there and soon they to will be getting invitations to race in grand Prix. For the accomplished athletes they probably get more invitations than they can attend and running at the games does not earn them any value since their rivals are not participating since they are not in the common wealth e.g Ethiopia and the prize money and glory associated with common wealth races does not deserve their attention. This is a win win situation for Kenya and Wanjiru. @ Kusaidika humidity in dubai in January is crazy and its hot. I do not see the record being broken in dubai. The place to break records is chicago and berlin cause they are flat and the weather can play along and become cools. I hope dubai invite wanjiru and Haile Gebrselassie decides race and doesnt balk out. How he convinced the berlin marathon organizers not to invite wanjiru is amazing. This is the race we have all been waiting for. Wanjiru will be carrying the wrath of Kenya as we enter Kenyas golden marathon era. Haile Gebrselassie is a great athlete who wanjiru should race before he bows out as the world "greatest marathoner". Gebrselassie is probably the greatest marathon runner but he should not retire before he races our wanjiru. Haile is not only a great runner he is also very smart hence his longevity and domination of the road races in his later career. Dubai will be a race to watch. I relish seeing Haile Gebrselassie lose. A great athlete he is but he has caused Kenya grief with his domination of the marathon.

not sure which is more patriotic - our fanatical support for english premier league teams whose owners and players cannot pinpoint kenya on a map of africa or wanjiru hoisting kenya's flag by winning the chicago marathon.

It not likely that Kebede would do New York so soon after Chicago. Technically possible but suicidal and he would not win. I think Wanjiru has the $500K won. I agree that Dubai is unlikely to see a Marathon world record, despite the money, the weather for one is terrible. Most likely the record will come from Berlin or Rotterdam, if conditions are right and Gibreselasie agrees to race Wanjiru, Kibet and/or Makau. My respects though goes to Robert Cheruiyot, the guy who did Boston in 2 hour 5 minutes. That takes some doing, when you consider the course is so hilly that it would not make the IAAF accreditation if it was starting today. Talking about Delhi, did anyone see Kipsiro doing a 'Kenyan' on Kenya? We may have talent in depth but the rest of the world is waking up. "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. Wanjiru is really talented I like the way he plays with his opponents increasing and decreasing the pace at will.I think this is his tactics -controlling the pace of the race. Is Haille Gab... a clock runner?? I think that's a little harsh, because for a decade he was the greatest runner in the world. And part of me accepts that he's earned the right to earn big money racing the clock in races of his choice. However, I can't help but notice that he has never raced head to head against a top-ranked marathon runner and won, with the possible exception of Duncan Kibet last year, who was just poor. Geb's marathon wins have all been clock efforts, his failures coming in London, with the strongest field by a long way.
Also, I must confess I'm tired of excuses from Geb after every failed attempt. In London a few years ago, he missed a water station. Then a year later, it was because the rain had made the cobbles slippery. Then it was too cold, or too hot. And it's always windy. Beijing was too polluted, and the bed was uncomfortable in Dubai earlier this year, causing him to sleep badly. Now, in New York, the lead vehicle kicked up too much dust, making the air difficult to breathe. Geb may well have asthma, granted, but sometimes you're just not good that day. One excuse after the other for Gebrselassie in the last few years and it's all becoming a little tired.

Did you watch how he kept running straight behind Kebede. This allows Kebede to take all the wind while at the same time Kebede cannot see him, he turns to the right hakuna mtu, to the left hakuna mtu yet he knows he must be there somewhere. It wrecks havoc on his mind. Those surges at near sprint speeds after having run more than 40km are like taking punches for both runners. They are what separate the boys from the men. See Wanjiru staggering and almost losing his balance at the end of the race like he is drunk. The speed these guys run at is incredible. Consider this: If you were to run a marathon at the speed of 10 seconds for every 100 metres (Just short of World record Full sprint pace) you would finish in 4200 seconds which is 1 hour 10 minutes. These guys do the marathon in 2 hours 6 minutes which means they run at almost 60% of a sprint pace for 42 km!!!! To test yourself and see just how crazy this is go to a field and try do one lap (400 metres) in 1 minute 12 seconds!!! Imagine yourself at that pace for 2 hours six minutes.
