I am a firm believer in history repeating itself, so this is for people like me, who want to look at past scenarios that mirror the Kenyan mobile market, in order to predict the future.

On my part I think that the mobile market in Kenya is shaping up just like the video game console market. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have played out the EXACT same patterns in the recent past. Here is a Wikipedia article on "Console Wars":

Anyone interested should focus on the war between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo's video game devices. In a summary, the formerly market dominant Sony came dead last, the incredibly cheap Microsoft came out second and the innovative Nintendo came out first.

This particular historical analogy shows that INNOVATION will win this war!

There is no parallels between video games and this telcos!
Your are very young I can tell there have been several console wars.
The first war was the commodore vs others. This consoles failed because third party game makers could make games for this consoles without the console maker control. If you ever played atari games you will know all you needed is a huge floppy disc and copy the game from your friend which I did often.
The next war was sega vs nintendo and this went on for a decade. Pitting segas sonic vs nintendos mario. This games went through 8 bit and 16 and 32 bits. Nintendo took the lead with their nintendo 64 and beating the sega saturn and segas counter was sega dreamcast which failed and this is when the next war started.
With Sega down and out having being bitten by nintendo and the playstation hitting the final nail in the coffin sega was buried. That said this companies did not repeat the mistake of the coomodores they had full control of their systems so you third parties had to have permission from the console maker and that trend has continued till now!
The third main battle was nintendo vs sony who led this market. The field was later complicated by microsoft but sony still dominated this market. This fight is still going on but the current market leader is nintendo wii.
How this compares to our telecos is only in your mind!
