hey guys, been on sk/wazua for quite some time and all this while, i've always hesitated to ask for your advice on trading while still in school. what are the chances of doing well, if any, and what steps and actions would you recommend apart from participating in the "Inter university Investment Challenge".

Being in UNI for me means, not having chunks of ready cash to buy into companies. It alo means little or no knowledge at all about stock transactions.
I got the interest though.

I welcome any ideas, of how one can start humble.

Forget safaricom . That a tooooooooo löng term strategy. What you want is quick cash . And thats what i'll help you get. Since you never got into co-op and i dnt knw why you can jump into KQ quickly. To be on the safe side wait for the uptrend confirmation kesho. As we talk i hope u hav a CDS a/c if you dnt please log off wazua and never come back, lol.

@webish as a student your money is short, so you look at the lower priced shares mostly below sh 20. Choose value and avoid the cheap and worthless. Good buys are kenol, centum and safcom. Shares like unga and sasini, though not great companies are fairly priced and will give good returns in the medium term. Avoid highly speculative shares like access, scan, co-op(at current price) or you will burn your fingers and swear never to buy shares again. Don't touch the likes of everready, sameer, orchards, olympia unless you want to lose money.
Life is short. Live passionately.

@webish. I agree with @sparky. Keep your eye on centium by the way . I also like kenolkobil . There is a tendancy for stocks with splits to perform well inthe short term. Atleast thats what a study in the us showed. And dnt dare take a loan to buy stock . I knw u might be tempted. You have been fore warned.

Still in Uni, means you are young and therefore time is on your side. Invest in quality stocks and hold for a very long long time. Warren Buffet says that his favourite holding period is 'forever'

@ Webish its great you have decided to take the leap into stocks i can guarantee that you wont regret it.
First Wazua is a great resource but never ever take advice from this site at face value. Avoid hot tip they are usually over rated guess work. Wazua helps you focus your research on the few companies that might be good value.
Your stock broker is more often than not a hyped up and well educated shop keeper. Advice from your stock broker should always be followed up by research! Never buy just because anyone told you including your broker.
Do your research. Check SK archives to see how people do it. Basically papers(dont forget the East African), company website and always looks at the companies books. If you don't know how to look at the books learn!!! Wazua is a great resource. There are several blogs out there bankelele for banks and a few techno related issues and companies. Stock brokers usually have weekly and monthly reviews on the market some stock brokers are better than others but not all are infallible so always do your research.
There is always another rally coming up. It is never too late to invest in value stocks you havent missed anything you have just started your journey!!
You will get your fingers burnt that is given. With good research, Wazua, and good luck(Dont rely on this) you can mitigate the risk to low levels.
My advice on the stocks you might want to buy is Mumias, centum. Do your research and decide which one you want to buy into.
You can invest small save 5-7 k per month and keep buying Most campus students can do this especially if your on the loan. Dont use your chacha money( Is helb loan still called that) to buy a stereo or telly buy share you wont regret it.
That said happy investing and enjoy the journey!!!

..webish.. be advised to learn from other people's lessons..there's too little time to learn your own! Think

first..above all else money is a defence...wisdom is a defence..but the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to its possessor..

That 1k for safaricom... add 5 soc, and Buy "One up wall street" by Peter Lynch... probably today.. then give yourself time to learn..read..and reread..i suggest u get contacts of The Deal, VituVingisana and mukiha..and google a dude called MainaT..used to read his posts on sk and his blogspot..mjengakenya.blogspot...or something (i forget the name.)..the reason being..they have levelhead approach to stocks...and so are many others but these guys just came easy to mind.

The key to your investments success is found in your ability to educate urself..learn..and apply that u learn..in one word..wisdom. Knowledge..your own..and not mine..nor bulk of what guys post here..your own..will save you.

If not you'll be a victim of threads screaming "BUY! BUY! BUY! this or that"

While at it..follow this link and download mp3 on show me the money and the financial fitnessseries ..includes teaching by likes of Kibuga Kareithi..former NSE chief sonko! smile

@qw... there is no way you can advise a novice still in uni to trade instead of invest unless you want to destroy his/ her wealth

@webish your probably still young so i would advise you put small amounts at a time in a good company for a long period of time and avoid diversification if you choose the long term

@webish; I bought my first shares (BBK IPO) before I went to university! Borrowed the cash (sh1,600 - a tidy sum in the mid 80s) from my dad.

My advice: pick one blue-chip, buy a small amount regularly every month until you finish your studies. You won't be a millionaire in four years, but you will be miles ahead of your peers!
Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.
