BAT kenya has served me well in the past 1.5 years. Been watching my initial investment creep up from 129 and 138, now at 207. Though i put in less than 100k, the dividend has been coming regularly in thousands. How come on one else talks about this share on wazua. I plan to shuka this bus if it hits 300.

@sparkly BAT is one of the best investments due to superb dividend yield and stability of the company making it a very defensive counter in times of disaster...

but IMHO i think the company is not talked about alot because of little news and activity on the company and also because it has limited/slow growth potential which means are slow and gradual rise in the share price and we all know wazurians are in love with those counters that keep on having share price growth spurts and alot of news flow around them

but all that said BAT is a super solid company and i'm sure 300 will come soon

@the deal, the PE is 14, While DY is 7%. Not expensive fundamentally although you need at least 20k to invest. I would rather have 100 of BAT than 5k of everready.

Does anyone here dislike BAT's product to the extent that you wouldn't invest in the company? Any "ethics investors"?

@VVS BAT went up when everything else was going down. It pleasantly surprised me.

@Guka, lol

@Mukiha rangi ya pesa ni hile hilee tu...
I remember Philip Ochieng'wondering in one of his articles how Evans Mwaniki, who was a model student at Alliance, Head boy, very christian ended up at the head of both BAT and EABL.

Maybe Ochieng' had a score to settle with Evans but at the end of the day if business is legal, why not?

Is this the same ochieng who was head of the 'yellow rag not fit for cleaning my arse' called kenya times?

The future is gloomy for this stock.......
With Kenya ratifying the tobacco control by the WHO .....
Creating of antismoking body .....
Nacada et al .......
Parliament banning advertising among other measures ........
City councils banning smoking on their streets .......

The only light in these dark tunnel is somali ....
With BAT doing booming business in somali ....
Somali their light in the tunnel ......
Which is also a double edged sword being the train coming to crush them on their death bed ......
Rest in peace BAT.....

@real cindano, now why are you making these alarmist predictions? Why BAT is not dying any time soon: 1. BAT not only makes cigarettes for kenyan mkt but contract-manufacturers for other countries in east, central and south africa. 2. Non-advertising does not mean death for the co/industry 3. Tobacco is a naturally defensive sector- puffing may have no health benefits, in fact its harmfull but people will continue to puff away. 4. The revenues for the government in taxes, makes it a huge stakeholder

@spanky sorry to burst your bubble .......
belittle you knowledge .......
and expose your ignorance ......
all the countries you mentioned have ratified the WHO framework on tobacco control. The framework covers advertising, promotion and sponsorship by tobacco firms, Packaging and labelling of tobacco products among many other things .....
the guidelines are restrictive....
have you looked at their book???....
You should and you will notice export to somali have increased .......
Sales of Tobacco products are falling in europe and will soon follow in Kenya and slowly and surely will fall in other countries .....
@spiky we do not live in a bubble!

I think people will continue to smoke irregardless of whatever restrictions in advertisements or promotions are put in place. This is for a very simple reason; smoking tobacco is not illegal, it's a choice and lastly it's very addictive. What i find rather curious is the large number of younger women and teenage girls who are joining the club. Make no mistake, i do know that the habit is lethal and fatalities related to smoking can never be denied.Bottom Line: BAT will continue to make money and pay hefty dividends as long as Tobacco farmers need to earn their livelihoods and smokers have a choice of lighting up.

There is a joke that goes around medical circles to the effect that tobacco is more dangerous than marijuana (bangi)... thus governments should ban the former and legalise the latter!!!!

Mukiha, it is a fact and not a joke. I gave up tobacco years ago, it's negative health effects are just too many when compared to marijuana blocking blood vessels allover, bronchitis, lung cancer, tongue cancer, amputations e.t.c. Actually marijuana is rated by many health experts as a light drug and alcohol is rated more dangerous than marijuana. I understand some people can get addicted to marijuana but from my experience it is unlikely. i think responsible use of marijuana should be promoted rather than discouraged. Tobacco should be banned and BAT turned into a marijuana processing company. I hope to light a small or big one well into my sunset years.

@real cindano well noted, good you said 'restrictive' not 'illegal'. Let me let you into a little secret; the reason i was able to pick BAT at 129&138 was because of fears that the "Tobacco Bill" would kill the industry. See @VVS's signature! It is sad nay tragic that you are still in fear.
