Hi Wazuerians?

I have heard a number of people talk of importing used cars from Japan at slightly lower costs than the local markets can offer. Does any of us here have experience or understand the risks involved in the whole process? do the price differences matchup to the risks? kindly share

i have also been wondering about this. The bad thing is that many car dealerships here for 2nd hand cars are really controversial. Someone please advice on cost differences and the pros and cons of either methds

You will save anying from 50K to more that 100K coz thats what the dealers here will load as profit, if you need to be sure whic japanese dealers you are dealing with or you may be conned! You also need to know the importation/KRA cost before hand to avoid paying too much.I currently have a premio and a probox bieng cleared at the ports rite now.

Nobby, could u be kind enough to share information on the reliable car dealers your are importing from, I gave my number to some guys from IBC Japan and they have been calling me so hard till I started suspecting them. The rate at which they are pushing is suspect. could you kindly advise (from your experience) on the reliable dealers and also the procedures.

Hi Mbalatya,Wazuans,

IBC japan are quite aggressive it can be scary.they are as prompt in replying emails for potential offers made online.I know people who have imported cars from IBC though.
it saves you 100k-150k to import from japan. sometimes even upto 200k. depending on car. always do a background search on a new company- get info from japan embassy etc.
companies i can vouch for coz have used them before www.kobemotors.com, deal with a guy called Fahmi. phone no on website. Autoassista.com- they only ask for 10 percent off CIF cost till car gets to mombasa then you pay the balance.

@Mbalatya: True, u could save Ksh 50k-100k by importing.Because you are a virgin in this business you may loose Ksh 100k-200k thru self importation.
my advise would be you go around a few yards and get quotes on the car model u r interested in,then check the reasonableness of the quotes via WAZUA and BUY.
Plus, wazuerians can help you understand mechanics of not buying a stolen/overage vehicle

john P, no offence, bt being a virgin doesnt mean u gonna lose anything.
I was a virgin last year(!) b4 inporting and i ddnt lose any. Mbalatya, if u use one of the reputable japanese companies, its jus smooth. The only issue is to get a good clearing agent once the car lands in mombasa. Trust me, importing for yourself, u'll save alot. Am nt against cars in the yards, but they all got their milleage messed up big time, u buy a machine thinking its clocked 45k kumbe the thing has 200k on it!

Importing from Japan is always a plus, you get to see the original specs of the car, without tampering by the local dealers.

However, when you import, know that you will spend at least 20K in accessories, e.g. alarm, locknuts, tyres(maybe), service, radio, identity.. e.t.c.

I just dont trust these local dealers, one person showed me a car with mileage 46K, i checked the mileage according to JEVIC sticker online. Showed that mileage when car was exported from Japan was 220K. plus they tamper with parts. I think its easier to get from someone who imported for own use, and is selling for various purposes.
