Apparently having a prepay meter is more of a curse than a blessing, the cost of the unit is ambigous and arbitrary the same amount will get you a different number of units. Anyone experiencing the same?

I hv one of those meters! I guess lyf is predictable wit the prepaid meters rather than initially where one would hold his breadth while opening the bill which ws ever fluctuating.

Unit costs fluctuate with fuel and forex surcharges. Prepaid tariffs are more expensive than postpaid ones the world over so yes, you are now paying MORE for your electricity.
Will KPLC refund the 5,000 deposit paid for previously? And what happens when an account was in credit at the time of conversion?

Many of you guys are misinformed...! @GG makes a great point about surcharges.

And in typical Kenyan style lashing out bila information or doing any research.

The law (& ERC regs) does NOT allow KPLC to sell 'units' of electricity. At the minimum, the ERC regulations makes it difficult for KPLC to do so. They have to sell 'cash' (as in voucher in KShs) which is then converted to units based on a formula that takes in to account various fees, charges, VAT, taxes, levies, forex pass-throughs & thermal/fuel pass-throughs.

Even safaricom does not sell you 'minutes' but airtime is sold in KShs. The 'units' are priced separately (From 0.80-8.00) depending on when/where you use them.

KPLC is working on a solution (brief discussion 2009 AGM) but it requires the approval of GoK, ERC, KRA. The 'solution' will take time because there is need for data to back up the request.

@GG - I think you will get your 'credit' back once they finalize all the final billing for post-paid meters. That chapaa is yours.

I am not sure as regards the 5,000k deposit since that might be applied to the installed meter (in case you damaged it out of spite... LOL)

KPLC's version is different. They say they do NOT want to work with you.

They say you used 103 units but complained that 103 is not really more than 100 but is actually less than 100 & closer to 97 as every schoolkid in QWland knows 97=103<100.
