Survey of Ethiopia-Kenya power interconnection starts shortly. The project is being funded by ADB,WB and EIB and is expected to be completed by 2013.This involves construction of transmission lines of about 1200Km from Sodo sub-station in Ethiopia to Longonot.Kenya will import an initial 500Mw at a cost of 4 cents (Compare that with Kshs 2.40 which Kplc pays Kengen per unit). Is this not doom for Kengen given that Ethiopia is ready to export more all the way to SA ?....While at it,what makes Ethiopian electricity that cheap?

Will definately be a threat.

KenGen will focus on geothermal power over the next few years, and may actually result in higher elec tariff prices going forward. An example is the recent 2nd half performance (Dec-Jun '09), where hydro-power failed but geo&thermal improved. The average price per Gwh sent by Kengen was actually higher because they made less from hydro. 2013 is the year this may manifest.

But just how long will it take to build that transmission line, considering all the processes involved (capital & legal & political)?
