I need to acquire 20/40 foot containers (like those that transport transit goods)) to convert to a house. Could any one of you know where i could get some and the budget.

@Giver,
Try steel structure ltd if you are in Nairobi.I understand they have little beautiful portacabins that might impress.Don't try calling them or e-mailing.They rarely respond.Just pay them a visit.

Steel structures are damn expensive.

A bit unrealistic in that one would be going for container houses to cut on building cost on the conventional houses.

I had a similar idea. I got a quotation of 250k for a 40 ft excluding transportation and partitioning costs. So i figured that i am better off putting up 3 rooms that could be latter integrated into the main structure at a latter date.

@Muheani - 40 ft = $3000 excluding transportation costs. The guy I spoke to needs to know the design of the house you want in order to give an estimate.

Things may come to those who wait,but only what’s left behind by those that hustle.

Well,i had earlier planned to stay in a converted container house as i constructed a 3 bedroom house. But when i learnt the costs were peaking to 350k i decided to construct the house in phases. Phase one involved construction of the foundation of the 3 bedroom house that cost me some 250k. Phase two involved construction of part of the house. In my case I decided to bring up the sitting room,the kitchen and one bedroom to habitation state at the additional cost of 200k. I made a temporal partition of the sitting room to create a kitchen and converted the kitchen into a temporal kids bedroom. I moved in immediately power was connected to save on rent. I kept most of my stuff at a friends place. In six moths I had saved 200k on rent which i used to put up the second bedroom,in door shower and toilet,and completed the kitchen. Another six months and i put up the third bedroom... The story is long. My aim was to be on site as the construction progressed. Your case may be different.

What do I say...very inspirational.
Hadn't thought about it that way. Now understand wahy someone in the neighboughood has put a very nice stone wall all around his 4 bedroom mabati house.

Got about 400k cash,got a design over the weekend.

Raring to go
