I have been talking to several guys who have made it to high levels of success. One astonishing thing is that all of them,started by something not very straight to be where they are. Capture this:
1. I was an Uchumi stores keeper. I opened a shop in eastlands. I never bought the first stock and a couple of replenishments. I channeled some from uchumi and got myself started. Says one tycoon who is a multimillionare in real estate.
2. I was employed in a property management firm as a Field manager. I used to collect rent but not to receipt it. I ferried goods from China and Dubai and got myself started. Says one tycoon who is a multimillionare (in his early thirties)now in car hire biz and several exhibitions for rental.
3. I started as a housegirl. My boss used to leave me with more cash for shopping. I never used to buy foodstuff in time but rather go to Garissa (eastleigh) buy clothes for sale then buy foodstuff later. That got me started. Says one single mother of two with green grocer shops in many parts of nairobi. Drives an Audi
4. I entered into a deal with the principal of that school. I could then be able to supply stationery to the school at exorbitant prices and share the proceeds with him. I got myself started. Says one importer tycoon with several businesses in town
5. I worked with EQBL as a recoveries officer. I went to recover a property from a defaulter and got into a deal where I scooped a clean half an M with no sweat. I got myself started. Says one general merchant and cocacola distributor in several places in NBI.

and the list is endless..

I really try to work very hard,save,invest but I never find myself moving up as I would wish. My question is this,must you do dark deal somewhere to place yourself on top.

Fellow Skerians,how did you start? Offer encouragements to the straight guys.

Son/Daughter :

Hard and smart work is what is needed....do not envy evil doers

For God says:

Psalms 26:5 -I abhor the assembly of evildoers and refuse to sit with the wicked.

Proverbs 24:19 Do not fret because of evildoers Or be envious of the wicked;

Your prayer should be :

Proverbs 30:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me

For :

The offspring of riches: Pride,vanity,ostentation,arrogance,tyranny'. Mark Twain quotes (American Humorist,Writer and Lecturer. 1835-1910) ...

Rules of the game here: Before you post anything think.give facts only..It's a serious blog for serious people....Do not insult your brother....respect one another...Just be good.... It's good to live a honest life....life without guilt.... Jeremiah 17:11 As a partridge that hatches eggs which it has not laid,So is he who makes a fortune,but unjustly; In the midst of his days it will forsake him,And in the end he will be a fool.' From the SK Anti-hate/anti- corruption campaigner..

Depends entirely on you.You may follow a shortcut and get rich quick(ignoring the millions you impoverise/maim/kill etc along the way).You can also take the longer way of hard work,perseverance and get rich.I am not there yet,but I know one day I will.I re-quote proverbs 30.8 for you!!

The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.Proverbs 11.3

@Fundaah,

That's good to have a foundation based on the right ground.

It only challenges an ambitious person who compares him/herself to others who have been there and there is no comparison.

Personally I believe in hard work and earning from my sweat. For the sake of conscience,i shun all evil sources.

Don't you think its surprising to note that the majority of those excelling used some dirty game somewhere?

I have been told of this professor who had a theory of opposites which has stuff like:

The brightest light will cast the darkest shadows
What goes up must come down
One man's meat is another man's poison
The more things change the more they stay the same
One man's loss is another man's gain
et cetera,et cetera

I do not believe in having to bend the law or play dirty to get rich. You don't even have to get rich,since whenever you get rich,by that law,you make someone else poor,no matter how hard you try not to. That is why all the rich are advised to invest in charity,and Bill Gates is one of the most charitable philanthropic of this world.

Being rich has more challenges than it seems

Matthew 19:23 Then Jesus said to his disciples,'I tell you the truth,it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

When we pray in praise to God,he makes a difference in our lives.

Technically Cases 3,4 and 5 are not stealing. I would say if you are working hard saving and investing you'll never be rich no matter how much you earn,thats not what it takes.

And by the way 'eye of a needle was the name of a place' and some camels did actually go through! Kina Bill Gates give to charity because Jesus told that young rich man to sell everything he has if he wants to inherit the Kingdom.

You say its not stealing? Then what is it?
What do you call using money of another without his permission?

@akowally,you introduce a different topic. What does it mean when even preachers are soo rich? No Heaven for them? I believe its a matter of interpretation. Jesus also said that Blessed are the Poor 'but in spirit '

@akowally - If I understood you correctly,are you saying that one should not get rich because you make someone else poor in the process?

Because if you are....

No,we can get rich like we all are aspiring to and some of us are. What I am saying is we should not get rich using dubious means and for the rich,it is always good to give back to the poor.

When we pray in praise to God,he makes a difference in our lives.

Samsa,its called being creative..do banks ask for your permission to lend out your savings?

Case 3. 'My boss used to leave me with more cash'..she was buying the food in time for the boss anyway
Case 4. 'Exorbitant prices' means a selling price slightly higher than cost price
Case 5. 'I got into a deal where I scooped a clean half an M with no sweat' is that smart or what?..in real estate you make a lot of money in 'auctions' 'foreclosures'

Samsa,if you look back,those opportunities you let go cost you a fortune,at least in opportunity cost.

Started as an office messenger - used to deliver letters all over Industrial Area trekking point to point. Was well educated and qualified,so talked to my boss's partner (my boss was pissing all over the business,eating client money). Partner had trust,lent me some $100 to open an office here (year 2001 June),he was based in Moshi. He would send me money,I would buy the goods and send over to him (mainly Chemicals). It's a long story,but my first boss had to go back to employment (still holds the grudge),money came and we separated with my second boss (a good man and still a very good friend ),I went solo and never looked back till today (will you dare look back). Apart from Stocks,I'm in Forex Bureaus,Computer Dealing,Tour Operation,Cybercafes,and lately long distance haulage.

For me,it's HARD SMART WORK - PLAN A & B always part of any operation I undertake.

@ Samsa,

This may sound extreme but please bear with me. I do not know of ANYONE,who is rich,that does not have a 'story' behind them.

I take this opportunity to dare all SKerians to give me only ONE example of a rich guy without a 'story'. Must b at least someone abit known in the public domain not that uncle of your in Ndarugo who we know nothing about!!

@ghettomafia

You are the only one who have started addressing the objectives of this thread.

I get you. Working smart hard. Having Plan A & B always.

Two questions for you. You got a loan of $100 that got you started to be where you are. So you actually started from a red position. Can you share here how and what you did to get back to normal grounds? You have introduced a new way of starting up without looking for shoddy and dirty deals. Someone who maybe a peeping tom or a log in member might benefit.
Secondly,if you were to be approached for such a small loan to help someone get started,could you extend the same?

@pierce,
We are together.
Infact all rich fellas I have come across have a story. What I am looking for is someone who might be here and never followed this unfriendly route. Someone who knows that he has a name,integrity,and personal values to protect. Other than waiting for a promotion in your jobo,someone needs to rise but carefully.
Where does the good people who are ambitious but have to protect their personal traits are left to do? What happens to them? Most of them in the society today have literally nothing. Not becoz they can't make good businessmen/women,not becoz they do not dream big. Nay becoz the way that most people are following are tainted and they are not willing to follow them.

@nairoberry,
I understand about creativity but MUST you be creative in doing what might be unethical?

Remember,when Mary Magdalene applied expensive nice smelling oil on Jesus feet.Those gathering around him grumbled that it was a waste.Infact they urged that the oil should have been sold and the money given to the poor.Jesus said to them ''the poor will always be,but the son of man will not be here forever''.The moral of this reading is simple.f you are destined to be poor you remain poor no matter what you do.

However workhard in whatever you do because when the blessings come they must find you on the run not sleeping wallowing in self pity.Take heart brother because thats just the way it is.

The shortcut from 'rags to riches' got mass popularity in the late 80's,commotion in the 90's. I am sad to report that the chicken has started coming home to roost. All the ill gotten fame and gains are yielding diabetes,broken families,misery,heart attack.... Quite a few of them got high 5. The moral - eat your own sweat brother/ sister.

By the way - How much money/ wealth must one have to be considered rich?

Healthy eating = nutritious urine. Nyama choma anytime!

i worked in a cyber for a long time,one day i met someone online who believe it or not wanted to help someone from a third world country,i told him i needed my own business because i was tired of working for someone else all day long,and i didnt think i would ever make/save enough to own my own business,he asked me how much i needed and sent me the money through western union,i have never heard from him again and i have never met him.
i was helped by someone who didnt know me and doesnt know me up to today.
am not rich but i am better off than i thought i would ever be.
