It makes a lot of sense. Kenya needs two strong providers.

BBI will solve it

Its likely to be a 100% buyout (Airtel Africa buying Telkom Kenya) not a merger.

Yes that what the talks were about over the weekend;100% or partial buyout but with Airtel having majority shareholding (50+1%)

Reminds me of when Michael Joseph begged Telcom/Posta to become their Super-Agent for Mpesa. An idea the old folks counld't envision and brushed it off. Telcom would be the Safaricom 5X today.... d'oh!

https://techweez.com/201...a-kes-1-billion-budget/

Telkom Kenya has announced a KES 1 billion expansion plan that will see further improvements on 3G and 4G coverage. The budget is also targeting to optimize its Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) product that is set to improve the quality of service (reliability and accessibility) offered to enterprise and corporate customers.

The expansion of 4G services will be augmented by the long-awaited Loon Project, a partnership between the operator and Google’s subsidiary, Loon. Loon has been testing its high-flying internet-beaming balloons for the better part of 2018. The tests are set to be commercialized by mid-2019, which Telkom hopes to diligently meet.

At times a blessing/win might unexpectedly turn out to be a curse/loss in the medium to long-term ...

I am with you on this one. I could be wrong here but Telkom was showing signs of stirring to life....
Airtel has one tool and just one tool in their toolbox. Financial Engineering. Cost management, cost cost, cost, cost..bean counters run supreme. They make Safcom's work so easy. This lack of imagination is also why the parent company is getting the beating of its life from Reliance Jio.
Damn.
