You say you have been paying tax?
1.) Have you migrated to I-tax?
2.) Did you file a non-nil return?
If yes to both questions then i think this is a mistake by KRA.
To KRA,
Maybe on October 17th because of all the stress of PIN deactivation/reactivation, I may be too tired to vote... (get the hint)?
Yes, i have been filing returns and it is a lot of taxes. I am sure if you look at my payslip paye part you will pity me. Will take time tomorrow and meet those guys. Though i had a chat with a tax consultant and he said that if you have ever done business and the company withholds tax (3 %or 5%) and files it incorrectly as VAT then it will affect you. I think this might be the case with me.
So many things i need to learn now like Turn over taxes etc so i know how to defend myself tomorrow. I meant to understand that VAT is for companies who do more than 5m annually..., any hints here?
The VAT obligation could be your undoing; it requires that you file monthly by 20th.
1. Are you registered for VAT obligation ? (should be able to get this from the pdf they sent in the emails since you cannot log into the iTax portal)
2. Those side businesses have you registered with KRA and obtained VAT number ?
If any of the above questons is yes, then dont even think of turnover tax discussion as it is to guide you determine whether you will apply for VAT or not.
If the answer to both questions is NO, then start thinking of turnover tax.
This is applicable when your annual turnover is less than 5M and it is at 3% of the turnover - no deductions. Self assesed. Going this route I hope you have all transactions well documented and can show your turnover as well as the amounts paid to the taxman. Key word here is book keeping.
If you book keeping is poor then you will have veeeery long and deep discussions with the taxman. However showing up is enough goodwill and dont feign too much ignorance or be the 'know it all' defensively.
Just go through what you know (and can prove income wise) then show what you have paid for tthen ask to compare with their records. Should be ok and pin reactivated.
Live and learn; and don’t forget, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
