Last night Julie Gichuru hosted a roomful of Mau Mau veterans...actually freedom fighters from all over Kenya representing the Luo,Luhya,Kalnjin,Meru,Akamba and Kikuyu. It was quite a sight to see the solidarity and oneness when they recollected the struggle - there were no Kikuyus,Luos or Kalenjin - there were just people whose land had been wrested from them. The spoke of the curse that has dogged Kenya from the get-go....of how inequity crept in after independence and the so called home guards and chiefs,whose descendants today are the ones who wield a lot of power and own large tracts of land. Indeed Kenya's problem is not really of tribalism but inequity....
Its really sad that the vision they had,the raison d'etre of the struggle has still not been realised nearly 5 decades later....and they languish in poverty and watch helpless as the country sinks deeper into an abyss....
The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less
