i just came across an article that was talking about genetic differences between races and how while races are really biological myths and social constructs - they are indeed very real as determine
Quote:The likelihood that toxic waste has been dumped in your neighborhood, your ability to get a home loan, the quality of your kid's education, connections to job opportunities, whether or not you're likely to be followed in a department store or pulled over by police, are all influenced by your race. Race does matter. Not race as genetics but race as lived experience, what sociologists call "social" race.
it gives examples from that point to that fact that what we sometime consider as racial markers are actually markers of places of ancestry. for example sickle cell anemia (long thought as a marker of negroness) has been shown to be an adaptation to malaria (common in west and central africa but almost lacking in south africa). it has been found in places like yemen, turkey, greece whose ancestors traded with west africa. it explains how real the 'social' race is as African americans had been noted to have had one of the highest levels of hypertension but on examining their ancestral west africans it was noted that they had one of the lowest levels of hypertention.
