The author is Michael H. Hart, descibed as an economer and a mathematician. This American, he goes out of his way to search in History for the 100 most influencial men, from time immemorial upto current time (that was 1978). And he gives us the list of those 100 most influencial men according to his view. He gives reason for every person that he listed, why he chose this as number 1, why he chose that as number 2, why he choose this as number 30 etc. He gives you reason. And the amazing thing about his list is that number 1 in his list, guess... it's Muhammad (salalahu aleihi wa salaam). Link

This could easily become a religious debate - unfortunate. I'd rather it was a debate on the bonafides of Michael H. Hart, Jewish, BA 1952 Cornell; who's greatest act of note seems to have been this work, widely noted solely for his choice of no 1 as Muhammad. Michael Hart, obviously fond of controversial literary devices, in 1996 proposed partitioning the United States into four states: a white state, a black state, a Hispanic state, and an integrated mixed-race state. While not disputing names found on the lists, more reputable sources would include TIME, The 100 Most Significant Figures in History http://ideas.time.com/2013/12/1...cant-figures-in-history/1 Jesus 2 Napoleon 3 Muhammad 4 William Shakespeare 5 Abraham Lincoln 6 George Washington 7 Adolf Hitler 8 Aristotle 9 Alexander the Great 10 Thomas Jefferson

Link The only reason you have pointed us in the direction of this list is because Muhammad is #1. This is the author's personal opinion, therefore carries no academic weight. It also conflates with your own beliefs and therefore to anyone who differs with you (such as myself), it is of no consequence. You are being disingenuous. I would be guilty of the same sin if I put Jesus above your Muhammad or espoused writings that did the same.

TIME do this every year, to select an individual for annual honor. They recognize an individual who "has done the most to influence the events of the year." The report by @muganda was for 2013. And TIME has given it's methodology.
When they set out to rank the significance of historical figures, they decided not to use the approach used by historians. TIME instead, evaluated each person by aggregating millions of traces of opinions. The historians use principle assessment of the individual's achievements. While TIME ranked figures just as Google ranks web pages. They used several data sources including Wikipedia, scanned books and Google.
For example, TIME admitted that contemporary figures like Britney Spears against the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, is clear that Britney Spears’ mindshare will decline substantially over the next 100 years, as people who grew up hearing her are replaced by new generations. But Aristotle’s reputation will be much more stable because this transition occurred long ago.
So today, due to popularity, one individual will come top, and next year maybe another individual will be more popular. One time Adolf Hitler was the most significant Person of the Year ever according to TIME.
So in short, TIME ranking is based on public polls, rankings by other sources, even autographs, paintings, and baseball cards.
So if you rank as per popularity currently, then it will be like tyranny of numbers, demographics will determine the result. - Christians (33.4%) - Muslims (22.7%) - Hindus (13.8%) - Buddhists (6.8%) - Non-religious (11.7%) - Other (11.6%)
So you know and I know that taking a popularion and asking them about who they think is popular, then tyranny of numbers will win.
But the most fair statistics would be from historian.

@AlphDoti did you really go through the TIME list, what position is Britney Spears on the list? In your case, is the source a historian as you claim or an author?
On a more balanced Wazua note, religion and politics and development, seem to hold the grip of our human influence.
* Jesus/Muhammad/Confucius/Buddha have the most religious adherents * Napoleon/Hitler/Lincoln/Alexander the Great lead in politics * Isaac Newton/Einstein/Columbus/Louis Pasteur/Galileo/Darwin transformed modern life
The oldest of these in order are Confucius, Buddha, Aristotle, Jesus Irrespective of our belief, we are all united by Newton's motion, Columbus new worlds, Pasteur's medicine, Galileo's universe, or Darwin's evolution.
