For the record,Samuel Wanjiru is not illiterate. He completed his high school education in Japan. He speaks English with a heavy accent and that is not illiteracy. If you have listened to Ngugi wa Thiongo you would also note that he too speaks with an accent. Many times people have confused speaking English with literacy and even sometimes with intelligence. Please note that some of the world's most literate countries do not use English. (Cuba,Belarus,Slovenia,Latvia,Korea,Japan etc.)
Having said that,Wanjiru is not a news reader or an English teacher and let us judge him in his field. If ever there was eloquence in running,he is the Martin Luther King of the marathon.
People think marathon running is just talent. Well that is half of it. The other half is a lot of hard work and discipline. Ask any Kenyan athlete who has ever been in a training camp with Paul Tergat and they will tell you that he is the most hard working person they know. Samuel Wanjiru is no different. This man hits the road hard and from the age of 15 while at camp his dedication to training was noteworthy. His 4 wins in 5 marathons are a product of grueling hard work,a passion for excellence and a desire for self improvement. Even as everyone else talks about him breaking the world record (which he will do in due course) his focus has always been to improve his personal best,to run a better time. He is the world record holder in the 20 kilometres and the half marathon and from his 2 years in the marathon he sure has it in his sights to be one of the greatest marathoners. This young man represents something great,the values we would all love to have and instill in our children to be successful,so let us not judge him by his accented interview in a foreign language after he has given a world class performance at what he is truly good at.
