This is one peculiar habit i have never understood. And from my chemistry, alcohol has a boiling point of about 78 degrees C, so when you add boiling water to a tot of viceroy, all the alcohol will vaporize and you will end up taking just water. What am i missing?

Personally I only take ice cold tusker. But I see guys take whole bottles of spirits and never get drunk coz maybe most of the alcohol is evaporated by the hot water.

Aii apana that chemistry of yours is off the mark...does it mean you can separate the spirit from the liquid?and who said the water is usually above 78 degrees so many variables to consider...

in his world people can actually drink liquid at 78 degrees C or more without getting burnt. anybody who can take that drink without burning earns the right to drink his brandy the way he wishes.
