we are already using Google for our day to day problems. The class is becoming dull by the day. Books are outdated but the internet isn't. School is expensive but the internet isn't.We can pause download and rewind. Lectures from MIT just a click away. Listen to musings from our billionaire mentors on twitter. TED Talks that blow my mind away.
Sorry Mr Lecturer if you sound less convincing than the billionaire i'm following on twitter, less inspiring than the 15 year old hacker in Japan, less motivated than the lecturerer from the MIT website.

Change is happening.

Massive Online Open Courses are happening.

The world is taking on a new form right before our eyes. We used to be the last to know. The last to embrace. Ignorance was our defense but now no more.

What do you think is the future of MOOC (Massive Online Open Courses) in Kenya?
I have acquired the domain below

www. nikodaro.com

I am open to suggestions as to how we can use the internet to make effective change in our country using all the free knowledge and all the connections available. I want to start a revolution aimed at the Kenyan mind.
I believe that we're headed to a time in history where knowledge availability will not be an issue. How do we make Kenyans embrace this great resource and instill it in our culture?

I want it to be aimed at every Kenyan, eventually but the way i see it i need to start with the most psyched up group namely the youth. I want to aim the program at youth who drop out of school for any reason but have access to any media. I want it to be a collective contribution project like wikipedia but more adapted for Kenyans problems and solutions.

If its wiki based it could serve a large group of Kenyans but it will be hectic because the considerations would be many.

You don't have to necessarily target drop outs but youth in general is a good group.

Have you thought about how you're going to generate content?

Applause Applause Applause Somebody should make you head at the ministry of education! Just yesterday I was watching 'How to be a man', educational videos geared at teaching young boys. Started in the US eons ago, I need no answer as to why we are so behind in almost every sector. Watch how kids are fascinated by audiovisual, computer games, TV, movies, music videos etc, look at how they are influenced by pop stars... now tell me what are the best avenues to teach them anything? Compare that to our present mode of educationSad Compare that to the quality of educationSad compare that to end results after spending so many years schoolingSad

Boss, you have a fan in me. Even a free volunteer!

I am hoping to make deals with educational institutions. The platform will serve as advertisment for the institutions and at the same time create transparency which will hopefully foster quality education. This combined with the fact that production costs of media storage devices keeps going down will make education extremely cheap.

The dream i have is of a country where it's easier to access tutorials than to access hollywood blockbusters.

The value of educational content that can fit on a normal 4GB DVD supersedes the cost of making it. And after saturation and availability of content throughout the country i'm pretty sure things like teachers' strikes will be less of an issue.

Have you googled and seen if anybody else is offering the same service.
great idea but making money from it will be the biggest headache as most of your potential clients will not be seeing things from your angle .
You will learn alot of lessons from this venture.smile

@chessmaster, I am hoping to make "nikodaro" products available at every movie stall in the country. They say we dont have a reading culture in Kenya, but we find villagers watching 'inception'at the local video show. Complex ideas can be understood by anyone if they come in an entertaining means. We should not get stuck in mainstream means of understanding content 'books'. Deeply in this context you see why Sonko beats Jimnah.

The target audience is stupid, unmotivated, and almost retarded. We are not to make them guilty by any means. We make them feel accepted, smart enough to learn and we guide them step by step in the most gruesomly simple way to learn anything. Behold the reason why disciplines such as education, psychology and art exist,to make learning pleasurable and easy .We reproduce this cheaply via TV, DVDs and internet - thank you computer science. We advertise this concept beautifully - thank you journalism and you FINALLY get a tutorial on how to revolutionize your education system thank you "nikodaro".

All i need is positive criticism, funding, motivation and anything you feel you can offer. I believe value begets extreme wealth. This adds value to my country,no?

Your idea is 'on time' in terms of technology and market requirements.

But you may need to work on your system architecture. When planning or preparing you architecture you will need to imagine the future and draw down to 'now'.

I think this is the best help I can offer.

I think in GBS I have seen them teaching computer classes and one channel on 'digital tv' was about education. I don't necessarily think they are competitors as of now but serve as an example in the shift of how we view education.

Educational DVD's is a great idea in my opinion.Think about selling CPA lectures and walkthroughs. But education is no easy task. The most important thing to consider here is background of viewers. Different background exposure leads to different levels of comprehension. But this is a matter you can sort out.

You can also consider selling the items in native language. That would be revolutionary! I am yet to see an english - Kenyan(no need to name tribes) home learning dvd. Imagine a group like househelps, they can gain tremendously from the free time they have. Watchmen listening to educational material which can be downloaded just like ringtones. And that's just the lower end of the market.

Curiosity is the most important thing to inspire in a student. It becomes a fire in them that keeps them going and going. To engage I would suggest using symbols and examples that they can relate to. Communication is about use of and sharing common references.

Don't worry about funding.Worry about the content. If you have quality content, people will chase you with their money.

Apart from savings, the importance we place on technology and labor(skills) on productivity is discouraging.Although Kenyans appetite for investing is inspiring. We just need quality education, there is no escaping it.
