With over 8 million speakers isn't this a good market for a business related TV station? Most countries have a far less total population.

Most speakers of this language are known to be good / or with huge interest in business both informal and formal sector.

The license target area will be Nairobi, Central Kenya, area around Mt. Kenya, and Riftvalley. It can then spread countrywide and world wide later.

The features will include lengthy documentaries in success business stories in local communities and country wide educational case studies.

It will also feature interviews with business leaders.

Revenue will be generated from TV ads. The classified section will be made to have costly but few ads (To be different from the likes of Citizen and NTV).

Capital at a glance:

With the digital migration expected to be fully complete by end of 2013, country wide TV broadcasting license will lower to about Kshs. 10m.

The station offers a different media model so no need to get the celebrities to do the anchoring. Just quality feature with talented new comers.

I hate it when subjected to what I consider poor state of TV in Kenya. Hopefully someone will come up and think of this. I am busy elsewhere...who knows I might get into this one day.

That is an idea whose time may never come.

I was sceptical about vernacular broadcasts whwn they started over 10 years ago but they made it because they offered a mixed grill-news, entertainment, biz, preachings etc

24hr Business and news? That's a hard sell in Kenya. See what happened with K24. They had to augment news with entertainment just like other stations!

How much harder will it be with 1 community target audience?

how do stations like UTV (Unjiru Television) afford that?

It's definitely a great idea. I'm sure if Sk and his people are already on it if they've read your thread. There are 4 or 5 Kikuyu radio station and that just tells you there's demand for information. I think it should do more than just business news for starters, covering other news and use those Kikuyu Riverwood movies and music for entertainment.

That should have started yesterday! to reap from political campaigns.

BBI will solve it

With the digital broadcasting this would be viable as one of many other channels.

I thought it was Uganda tv, but was perplexed why they never air Ugandan stuff.

I always find journalists from the major stations recycling and begging for any business story available.

kenya hakuna business news, people love politics and most of the business people are not straight, theus they never want to share or have the biasharas featured

I think it's a great idea, though I'd add news, music (always a big crowd puller)and perhaps preaching.Wonder if one can do cartoons in Gikuyu. It's an idea that intrigues me and I would like to try it out.

Vernacular broadcasting is good only when offered as a mixed grill. Yours is too much specialization IMHO. You want to do biz only and for 1 community only.

How many are interested in biz only station?

The wikipedia article assumes that all ethnic Gikuyu speak Gikuyu. This is usually not the case. Many consider their mother tongue too complicated. You can confirm this by visting the samll towns where mainstream churches have vernacular and English services. The English services have higher attendance!

Maybe the time for vernacular TV is here but I think it shouldn't specialise in business.
