.. ' for all the stealing spree during the 1982 coup attempt, no bookshop was looted'

' a Kenya Air Force rebel soldier, was instructed to stand along Uhuru Highway and wait for instructions. He was still standing there - where he was arrested - after forces loyal to president Moi crushed the coup..'

Two things that changed in our culture as a result of the coup attempt:

[1] Shop display windows are blocked with thick steel sheets making our towns the ugliest in the world at night! Before then, shop owners used to use see-through metal grills

[2] Police on regular patrol started carrying guns. Before that, guns were never seen on the streets.

I think many here were not even born yet. It was quite a day in Kenya's history. I recall me and class mates hiding under desks at school on the 2nd/3rd day of the coup as clashes reached Kisumu...

I don't think we will ever know the truth.

Events which happened on that day made the son of Odongo to change completely from a humble teacher to a strongman!

Thirty years!! How time flies.

I woke up to hear the milk man and mother having an argument because he wanted to be paid there and then and mommy wanting to pay"tomorrow" when she went to the bank and withdrew mushara.

For the babies here, there was no mpesa, cellphones, atms or any other means of instant payment. Also there was no daytime television.

When daddy joined the foray, he was informed by the milkman that sirikal iko mikononi mwa wanajeshi.

VOK English service was faint but BBC was loud and clear. I got a new vocabulary that day Coup De ta. We spent the rest of the day arguing on how the word was spelt and what it meant.

Life went on kama kawaida. Such are the joys of living upcountry.

Oh. And I was Thirteen years of age.
