Africanization has referred to the modification of place names and personal names to reflect an "African" identity. In some cases, changes are not a change of transliteration rather than of the European name.

It is worth noting that in many cases during the colonial period, African place names were given English, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian and German names.

Various African countries have undergone name changes during the previous century as the result of consolidations and secessions, territories gaining sovereignty, and regime changes. These includes;

Dahomey - Benin
Bechuanaland - Botswana
Upper Volta - Burkina Faso
Oubangui-Chari - Central African Republic
Belgian Congo - Zaire - Congo, D. R
Middle Congo - Congo
Afars and the Issas - Djibouti
Spanish Guinea - Equatorial Guinea,
Abyssinia - Ethiopia
Gold Coast - Ghana
French West Africa - Guinea
Portuguese Guinea - Guinea-Bissau
Basutoland - Lesotho
Nyasaland - Malawi
French Sudan - Mali
