I must say we are living in interesting times...the news popping up on minerals in the country is just exciting... its like the geology department was awakened 5 years ago. I would never have thot that i would one day see a sentence like this on the papers.

"Turkana sits on one of the world’s largest proven gold reserves and also has a respectable array of gemstones. This laid-back region could be looking at the kind of transformation that was experienced by the South African region of Rustenburg with the discovery of platinum."

And another "In 2005, a 500-square-kilometre area stretching through Kitui and Mutito was discovered to contain one of the richest coal reserves in the world."

I just hope its not an exaggeration.

@kourage..a few years ago i did some offices in South Sudan, Torit county, less than 2 hours drive from Kenya Lokichoggio border.

Wht surprised me was the number of gold mines and oil mines so close to the Kenyan border in South Sudan.

This means if there is oil and gold 40 km off the kenyan border, there is a high likelihood of the same minerals to be found within Kenya.

The scramble for Africa that started in the 1890s is still active today though in a different fashion. I think the West has the resources map for everything in Africa. They know where to strike next for oil, gold or anything else they want. The East is proving hard headed and they are turning their focus on Africa. Nobody will use Kshs. 1bn to prospect for oil that they are not sure of.
The only thing the West is uncomfortable with is China in Africa.
@a4architect - Why is there a never solved dispute on Ilemi Triangle in Turkana which is claimed by both Kenya and S. Sudan.

@kourage, I think if a boundary dispute of some peasants somewhere in Thika can stretch for years, trust me, the one between Kenya,S.Sudan and not to forget Ethiopia, will not be easier. Boundary/border matters are never straight forward.
About cos spending billions to prospect for oil/minerals, of course before the lower the drilling gear, they'll have done survey and studied loads of data.
They are never sure, geology of the block leads them.
That's how that Australian co. even after sinking billions at the coast, they pumped out nothing.
Mining is risky and expensive business.

I guess they do, they are now doing some serious CSR. Are they the ones mining at lake Turkana?

Canada-based minerals and metals firm Pacific Wildcat Resources has said it will drill this year at a new site in Kenya that has shown potential for rare earth deposits.

The company said tests had established the presence of high grade deposits of rare earth on Kiruku Hill, just three kilometers from its current Mrima Hill niobium and rare earth project site near the port city of Mombasa.

"These results have further confirmed the prospectivity of Kiruku Hill for rare earth mineralisation," Pacific Wildcat President Darren Townsend said in a statement late on Tuesday.

Rare earths are vital in manufacturing high-tech electronics products such as highly specialised miniature nuclear batteries, laser repeaters, super conductors and miniature magnets.

An acute global shortage of rare earth has triggered a spike in exploration and prices.

China, which accounts for an estimated 97 per cent of global rare earth supplies, has been tightening trade in the strategic metals, sparking a jump in prices.

Japan, which accounts for a third of global demand, has been stung badly, and has been looking to diversify its supply sources, particularly of heavy rare earths such as dysprosium used in magnets.

The United States, Europe and Japan last week joined forces to challenge China's restrictions on exports of rare earth minerals critical to the manufacture of advanced technology.

Pacific Wildcat said in February it had found larger niobium and rare earth reserves on Mrima Hill site than earlier projected.

Niobium is mixed with steel to create a strong alloy used in the construction of pipes for water and sewage systems and components used in various types of vehicles.

Funny thing is that even with all this prospective investments, Government may still go ahead and miscalculate how the country can attain maximum gains from these assets.

PERTH(BullionStreet): Australia's Aviva Corporation has encountered high grade gold deposits from the company's ongoing prospecting activities in Western Kenya. Aviva's Bumbo base metals project recently encountered high grade copper, zinc and silver in the initial drilling exercise. The minerals were found at least five metres from the surface.

Aviva is also actively prospecting for minerals at Bukura and Shitole near Kakamega.
