Kenyans have been ranked 3rd worldwide in rate of earnings increase in 2011.

I also believe the number 1 contractor in Africa by 2011 Elance earnings is from Kenya with US$75,000+

Outsourcing is the next big thing. I skills in demand are software development and content creation then many others.

Keep it simple

I was excited on reading this as you can imagine, but it seems some of us are no different from politicians who don't shy away from making bogus claims.

First of all, there is no breakdown data showing who has earned what amount, so its hard to know the actual earnings of persons (in any case that is likely to be treated as personal information by elance).

If you look at the more detailed map here

https://www.elance.com/q/online-employment-report

You will notice that Kenya is not even among the nations considered hotbeds on elance outsourcing. Only countries that appear from Africa are Egypt and South Africa. Perhaps Kenya will make an appearance in the next few years if the rate of growth in earnings continue with the momentum they have now.

But, Wazuans, stop making sensational claims without first verifying them.

I have been on Wazua for a long time (peeper then member) and been doing Outsourcing for a while. I do not have a history of making bogus claims. I am not sure you read the report in the link you posted. The "Q3 2011 Hotbeds" report you quoted is not in contradiction with the "2011 Rate of Earnings Growth" end of year report I posted.

But I do not want to be drawn into long abstract debates which I know are fairly common here. It is up to each of us to believe what we want to.

Happy New Year to all!

@amhere, very true...i av realise that may kenyans are going down that road( getting into online jobs ) which is a great sign of greater ICT penetration in the country.ION,am new on elance,do u mind helping me out as i embark on my baby steps?

@tupac,had the same issue. After numerous attempts, i left a voicemail message which was not acted upon..i then waited for their working hours(4rm afternoon for us)then sent a complaint via email, and only 10min elapsed b4 they called and verified.

Applause Applause Applause Applause finally i managed to have number verified.called customer care and they did it. I think they intentionally make it impossible to verify through the voice prompts so that one can make the effort to call them just to ensure its a human being verifying the number!!!!

I had the same nasty experience with elance regarding phone verification last year December.. I looked at odesk and never regretted. If you are a serious software developer (in this case Java developers .., I have seen PHP guys contratced for less than 5$/hr) I encourage you to join odesk . .. I started with part-time doing 10-20 hrs a week hourly rates of 10$/hr. Now I am putting over 30hrs a week besides my 8-5job.. Their payment system is ok, wire transfer takes kindu 3 days.. and voila, the dollars in your local account in local currency ..

This is something getting bigger n Just like what AmHere said, go there try It out & believe what u want to
They keep moving the cheese

that is fantastic Tupac, I want to hear more/other wazuan experiences who have made money online.

By the way, these contracts are like any other job. Sometimes, on the unlikely event, they are suspended say when client doesn't have enough fund to pay odesk so that the platform can inturn pay you.. but ultimately thy always unsuspend when the client cash flow is ok.

One can make money there as an Investor, read client, where you contract people to develop stuff for your.. Or you are just contracted to do stuff.

I have seen local corporates who do not trust local developers, they ship jobs to US and the outsiders end up hiring us to develop the software on odesk, and of course the local corporates looses millions since they would have hired directly from here .. talk of high level brain drain

thats right Lu. whatever the case. it feels nice working for Americans and Estonians while here in kenya. You need not emigrate to Europe or US to look for jobs. We do the jobs here; even though they are competitive. But from my experience on odesk, kenyans are doing a good job and are in high demand.....like I get jobs all the time and the employers prefer me to the Indians and the Philpines....whats ua experience Lu?
