Oil marketer Hashi Energy will from next year connect homes to piped gas in a process that will not only revolutionise the way cooking gas is sold in Kenya but also open a new battleground for control of the lucrative market.

The firm says it is targeting long-term contracts with real estate developers – especially gated residential estates – to provide gas to their housing units, offering the marketer guaranteed sales.

Let it come, but let them make sure they do an excellent job of it, leak detectors and all. An unattended leak in the system is the last thing anybody wants to imagine.

They are not welcome in my neighbourhood. Access Kenya came, dug the place up, never replanted the garden. Wananchi came, dug the place up, never replanted the garden. KDN came, dug the place up, never replanted the garden.Telkom came, dug the place up, never replanted the garden. I love technology and convenience, but I can't be spending my time cleaning up after these guys. And now I hear Safaricom want to lay their own cable. NKT NKT

This will be a very expensive affair as long as the local authorities do not prepare infrastructure tunnels for utilities and telecommunication. High costs of digging, laying pipes and maintaining them.
Life is short. Live passionately.

Trouble is, the new constitution vests such services on county govts. Maybe public-private partnerships but I do not see the county govts allowing Hashi to set such a service without involving them. The safety concerns are legit too since we are in a country where sewerage, water and oil leaks are common.
