with the current sky high prices, I feel it is time to wean my familly off this adiction. I do not think that sacharin is the solution, given its carcinogenic potential............any suggestions out there?

If price is your sole concern, it may be easier to make adjustments in other areas of your budget.
Example is if you contribute to my dividend (EABL)

Honey is also medicinal against so many ailments and conditions. Eg coughing(depends on the infection behind the cough) Sacharrine is rather expensive and is said to have major side effects.
Sodium Cyclamate could be cheaper but might have similar side effects as Saccharine. Some years back some pple were using Sukari nguru coz honey ain't cheap and those others ain't so readily available and r much more expensive.

i also think sweetners such as stevia would act as an alternative and also is a solution to the current sugar shortage.Farmers can plant the crop and sell it to the sugar processing factories

40% of the world's sugar is produced from sugar beet. How comes nobody has ever thought of introducing the crop to Kenya to be an alternative to sugarcane. Sugar beet can grow in 100 or less days in tropical countries, and can produce as much sugar as sugarcane does.
I just wonder what those guys at institutes like KARI are doing.
