Who belongs to the middle-class in Kenya today? And how much should one be making, per annum, while in the middle-class?

Middle Class in Kenya is determined by spending and hanging out joints
Wealth is built through a relatively simple equation

Can afford to run a mitumba car; various mpanga wa kandos; can get a loan from Ekweity and quarter nyama soma at Njuguna's every other weekend and has a 1/8th somewhere and probably lives in purupuru or equivalent.

@Governor,

Interesting observation. Is Middle class defined by Earning, Spending or Residential Area?

I disagree on the mpango wa Kando.

I think, a middle class kenyan should be one who earns between 40K - 200K kenyan money net.

Most probably living in a rented 2 bedroom house (ama na wazazi ushago), can afford a 2-3 days vacation to Mombasa or Naivasha annually and must be MALE!

For FEMALES, you cannot use salary to classify her, but should be able to;
i. Have a middle class jamaa,
ii. Can afford to convince a guy to take her to Mombasa in Dec.,
iii. Does not take chang'aa!

@dunkang,

It's funny how Landing finds it's way in almost all threads. I thought @Waithaka meant various side Hustles not the Mpango wa kando of the landing type

For you to be classified as middle class in Kenya you need to spend between $2 and $20 a day (Kshs 180 to 1800. Put simply, once you start shopping in a super market in Kenya... you have ceased living from hand-to-mouth (kadogo econ) and you've entered the realms of Middle class.

45% of Kenyans are considered middle class though quite a number spend between $2 and $4 just hovering above poverty line and will get back there if an disastrous event occur like disease.

Mpango wa Kando is not restricted to middle class... even the poor have...but hesabu is different

Middle class are those who have achieved the 1234 Kenyan Dream:

1 Wife / (Husband?)
2 Children
3 Bedroom House
4 Wheel Drive

smile

Funny enough found that we share some similarities with New Zealand...

Where would you classify Kenyans earning between 250K to 600K?

@Jamani, anyone earning above 200K is upper class, not elite!
