I recently visited my Rural Area after many years and found a newly contructed road, electricity and a nearly complete market. Thanks to Serikali ya Kibaki. I would like to start small on the above in our shopping centre since none exists. Anyone with experience and advice on the smallest minimum way that I can start, where to buy the equipments and licensing issues etc. Thanks smile

Where is your area? For a start, you can get refurbished pumps along outer ring Rd near Umoja one. Or if you want new ones, visit P J Petroleum Equipment Ltd in industrial area on Dunga Road, Opposite Ministry of Public Works. Since you want to start small, go for kerosene. The pumps are normally electric so you will need electricity, though they have options for manual crank. The pumps were costing around 150K sometime last year, not sure how much they are now. Remember not to locate your pump near a residential area as it will not be licensed by the authorities. For your stocks of kerosene, just visit the nearest petrol station and ask them who supplies their stock. And remember, kerosene is usually used by the low income folks, so go slow on your margins. This group is very sensitive to price. Don't price yourself out of business.

There are many different models of pumps. Need to be careful not to buy a cheap one with no aftersales support. Known brands are Wayne, L&T, Gilbarco, Tokheim etc. These are known to give good service.
As for licensing, one is now required to meet Nema certification in addition to local regulatory approval. Installations should meet Kenya Standard KS 1967-9 depending on type of installation. Currently, licensing not enforced though will be an issue for focus in the future

You can also buy brand new digital kerosene pumps from 100k-150k from Afrizole pumps or call 0723957547.
