Managed to see it, but only the tail as it disappeared into some unexplained darkness!

Quite a spectacle!

Geologists look for underground stuff; not in the sky! perhaps you meant meteorologists... but they only look at the atmosphere.... so really, you should have been calling for astronomers...[NB: not astrologers!!]
