are there any economic fundamentals that have been messed up with to warrant this shilling weakening??

during moi era ('93 to 98) it leaped to past shs 100 mark, but it was being manipulated by moi era crooks...

A weak shilling will herald terrible impacts on the state, a heavy importer n a very weak exporter. With such a poor balance of trade, brace for tough times that shall affect all of us, with a few set to reap big time. Case in point KQ.

Even during the Moi error, the shilling never dipped below 100, not unless you are talking of the black market!

Instead of seeing only doom and gloom, why not invest in agriculturals which earn their income in foreign currency and hedge your portifolios?

This is sad.its off the 80-85KSH target in the next 1yr.irrespective of the counter you put ua money in,the net effect is the same since we cnnt luk at the kenyan economy in isolation.

90 was expected. ICC after the six, the US & Europe after drug & corruption money, war in Libya & Gaddaffi's 'friends & interests' in Kenya, China increasing African invesments(Kenya is hq to most of its operations around East, Central & Southern Africa) & last but not least elections. Many 'people' want a weaker shilling and i do believe it is pure manipulation coz some huge amount of dollar might be coming in or is already in.
For sure Central bank could have averted this crisis early enough as we are net importers. Some personal interest is being fulfilled here. In most countries the dollar is weakening and the dollar demand around does not support this dramatic increase.
