Why shoot yourself in the foot? Really, really Mumias, sugar with vitamin A, really?? Sugar is sugar is sugar! Sugar and health is like water and oil! they just don't go. If I was Mumias sugar, I'd stick to selling sugar as a sweetener and not a health food. That's a big miss for Mumias and they should withdraw it. Speak of lack of innovation.... BBI will solve it :)

I work in the health sector and this is a big thumbs up for mumias. If you knew the high rate of children suffering from micronutrient deficiency includind children from urban areas you would be shocked. Vitamin A is extremely vital but lacking in many childrens diets alongside iron and zinc causing numerous ill symptoms. Infact, some countries, I dont know about Kenya, give companies that fortify there foods with micronutrients some tax cuts. Just google Kenya micronutrient survey then you will understand the benefits of fortifying foods.

I'll repeat it here. This is a project in collabo with a UN agency in an effort to get vital vitamins to the populace and what better way than to have them in sugar which is actually consumed by just about everybody.....ama waweke kwa Tusker?...Anyway,the target is mainly children and again, they will be fortifying about a tenth of their sugar and therefore consumers still have a choice......Now you know who is the joke....lol. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Quoting a publication from african journal of food, agriculture and nutritional development:
Micronutrient malnutrition, particularly vitamin A deficiency (VAD), iron deficiency anaemia, and iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are major public health concerns.
The prevalence of Vitamin A Deficiency are 61.2% among children and 29.6% among mothers Micronutrient deficiency has severe consequences namely stunted growth, blindness, reduce the human capacity to work, cause high maternal mortality, miscarriages and still-births in deficient mothers, just to name a few.
One Strategy to combat micronutrient deficiency in Kenya is:
Fortification
Today, fortification is increasingly recognized as a medium- to long-term strategy for improving micronutrient status in large populations in the third world countries . Despite its importance, it is a very costly venture thus the Kenyan government should give sufficient incentives to the industries that engage in food fortification programmes to stimulate active and sustained fortification.
Fortification is favored because it does not require dietary habit changes, can be implemented relatively quickly and is sustainable if managed well. Since in Kenya, most people use salt, sugar and flour, they will serve as perfect food vehicles to reach the vulnerable population

The choice of sugar is not well informed. We all know that you cannot use sugar and health in the same sentence.

The idea is that those that are already giving sugar will now have the added Vit A. And it is NOT correct to say that "We all know that you cannot use sugar and health in the same sentence" As was clearly explained in another thread, TOO MUCH sugar is unhealthy. In the same breath, complete lack of sugar is also unhealthy. You need it to supplement you body's energy... and now, fortified sugar, you will also get Vit A Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

It is Ok to fortify food, but i think the choice here is not good. Why not fortify jogoo, unga ya chapati, unga ya uji or even cereals??To me it feels like promoting a good thing with the wrong link........
A while a ago there was a proposal to fortify jogoo with folic acid to prevent neural tubal defects in newborns......i am not sure how this went but this is a better choice that fortifying sugar....my 2 cents.

Do you mean sugar the sweetener? We all know that most foods have sugar. In fact, nutritionists discourage people from taking sugar (the sweetener). In fact, some people have been advised by doctors not to take sugar (the sweetener). This sugar is only for the mouth. I doubt anyone has ever gone to hospital and the doctor has prescribed sugar (the sweetener) because of a health condition.

Fortified versions of all the ones you have listed are already available in the market. Have you not seen "Jogoo Extra"? Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

Those advised not to take by doctors are the ones who take too much. the key phrase here is TOO MUCH. And given the choice; would you prefer fortified or unfortified sugar? Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

Hi Mukiha, if you love your family, encourage them to do away with this thing, whatever the fortification. Please consider these links http://www.naturalnews.com/022692.html

so @tassia you are campaigning for healthy living through abstaining from sugar. No offence but I hav always taken regular sugar with no Vits. But since mumias Is offering a fortified sugar I will make sure I buy it bcoz of the vits. While at it you can go ahead and tell people not to take fresh juice since its so sugary, fructose and sucrose is more or less the same. As @Mukiha is saying Its better to take the little fortified sugar than the regular unfortified sugar. Talk to any nutritionist they will tell you sugar in moderation is healthy and necessary in the body...Energy giving food.
