Is it just me or does the standard online newspaper contain harmful viruses? This is the second time my computer has "downloaded" a virus from the site.

Anybody else notice this?

Well, this happened to me at work where we use mcafee virus scan enterprise. I opened the eaststandard and a trojan virus landed on my computer! Thank God it was destroyed. A few days ago, on my home computer while browsing the standard, the same Trojan virus popped up but was nipped in the bud by my Kaspersky's antivirus. I mean seriously, what is going on with the standard?
Its getting to a point where i am getting paranoid browsing standard online edition.

I use google chrome and Mozilla firefox on both computers.

i think its self explanatory - there are unsecure browsers and there are secure browsers. IE is the former.
- there are newspapers and there is trash in paper. the standard is the later.

Yes, this is true. EA Standard's site security is quite low. They are a regular target for crackers. If you access them via Google you will have seen the Google Site Warning on their search results several times

@masukuma, i use google chrome and mozilla firefox as my browsers of choice. The Daily Nation is my newspaper of choice for content and balanced reporting, but i like to browse all the dailies plus business daily africa and the east african.

I honestly think that some disgruntled employee(s) is maliciously introducing viruses (knowingly or unconciously) into their code.

@Kenyanlyrics, i agree with you that the site's security is definitely low. Why the paper would allow this is simply mind boggling.

The online edition is not good enough for my PC (This site may harm your computer) and the hard copy is not good enough for my ass.

@Njunge, what to do? Some of us are in the diaspora and cannot buy the paper from the street vendor. We get our daily dose of news online.

Yes, too many ads begging 'click me' when you browse the site with your phone.

I stopped browsing standardmedia.co.ke a long time ago. This reminds me to delete that bookmark....done!

Yeah. The site contains viruses. Simply Google it and you will get a warning message telling you exactly that!

Just what callibre of employees do they have in their IT department? Effects of nepotism and all other -isms?

This site has been flagged so many times by Google and mentioned as a site that is known to spread viruses. Now for Google to flag it, someone who has noticed a strange behavior after visiting the site reports to Google. Google flags the website after their independent confirmation that the site is spreading viruses.

Now looking at the number of times this site has been flagged of late, you are better advised to keep off this site. It can only imply that the guys in charge have completely no control of the happenings on the site.

Using more safe browsers like Google chrome is a good protection but not 100%. Even when Google has not flagged this site, you may still get viruses because, they may not have received a report to necessitate flagging.

Keep off this site!!!

standardmedia.co.ke and eastandard.net are blacklisted in a number of sites and contain malicious software.
