Hello Wazuans.

I have been a regular reader of this forum for 3 years since the SK days and have now decided to be a contributor. However to start with, I have a question - are there any positive success stories of Car Hire/Taxi business? I am thinking of venturing in as a extra revenue stream for my young family. Any ideas? All I have read in Wazua is dont dont never etc is this is just too risky a venture or what?

Car hire is a risky biz, but can be highly profitable. My take is that if u r to venture in this biz, u 1st of all have to start with looking for a good customer base.If u can get corporate clients or individuals who hire for reasonable times (1 week n above) this can be a good start. With good clients and say two cars for a start u r in business. Dont be desperate i.e. entrusing outsiders with ua vehicles, good client profiling will certainly be a plus.

Thanks Ceinz. Very helpful counsel especially on profiling customers. I suppose just like in Matatu Biz there are those really struggling and the smart ones who are making money. I will launch in two months and I hope to come back to you with a success story by Christmas. Thanks.

Some of the things you need to put into consideration are-
Get your cars installed with reliable tracking device this will give you peace of mind on the cars location.
Have your clients carefully selected do not be greedy and always trust your instincts if you do not know the client or the person introducing you to the client dont take the car.
Its easier to give a car for about 2 to 5 days this way you are able to monitor the condition of the car especially for individual clients.

My memory fails me...
Once knew a guy who left Safaricom to start this venture, and he became successful fast. His business was located in UpperHill and he quickly roped in Safaricom, Citibank, and many other major corproates.

But then the downfall began - not sure whether it was because he was travelling a bit, or he was not paying drivers, or he wasn't paying the financing for his cars!!! It happened too fast then nothing!

So it seems you really have to have your eyes on the ball on this one - ever present, ever vigilant, ever patient.

This is very sad that they would do something like that to there clients.

A couple of years down the line, how did your venture go @ChumviMacho?
