I know a few of the guys behind the new pay TV using analagou signals from KBC.We were talking last week and i was shocked to see the influence that DSTV has in the African continent which is ridiculous. To support this monopoly they go to lenghts to block any new competitor who comes in with cheaper technology. GTV, My TV etc. With demand for quality cheaper tv ( which should not be a problem coz satelitee is more expensive) there is no one who can compete with them. And dont tell me Zuku coz cable infrastructure in Africa now is ridiculous to maintain and limited.

I'd say DSTV is not the kind of company to be targetting for immediate change. Their end product at least is world class. Your energies are better spent elsewhere where you are paying through the nose for zero service!(GOK, Zuku, Telkom landlines etc)

read todays business daily on the following link

Unfair competition? Watch another company go down.. DSTV will not survive in the future. Its too expensive to maintain and the technology will be like land lines in the 90s.

@pessa: How so wrong you are. DSTV will always be here as long as local channels are still bogus! And DSTV are not competing unfairly, they are protecting themselves against any new entrant in their market.

I'm also privy to the NGB guys' thinking and I can tell you that they will not make any advances in the market until they become more innovative. Offering the same service (albeit of lower quality as that DSTV) will not make them any money. They will end up like GTV!

And ominously, the main proponents of Smart TV were also involved in GTV!

Also, DSTV is a world class service. They have rights to all major sporting events, Premier League package A(!), their movies are well timed with DVD releases, their music packages are expansive and up to date, their news channels are the cream of the crop, and their series are never more than a few episodes behind. Couple this with multi-view and HD PVR, you have a service that's like Netflix + TiVo + Cable all in one!

Considering the low demand for their services, for them to keep the cost within international price ranges is exceptional. To me, DSTV is a very well run subsidiary of a very well run holding company(Naspers), which is the reason competing with them seems an uphill task for many

I for one would not mind a strong competitor forcing DSTV to unbundle their sports channels.

I don't understand why I have to pay soo much for the EPL driven pricing premium package yet I have no use for EPL, I am happy with Rugby (SS1) KPL (SS 9) and ESPN (NBA and American Football.)This in an ideal world should make their product cheaper for me.

Interestingly I here that the package is much cheaper in SA and that the sports channels are unbundled, someone confirm. Sky also unbundles its sports channels for customers to choose.

@Obi 1: The reason why it is cheaper in SA is because of the penetration it has achieved. Here in Kenya, the rates are still high because not as many households have DSTV as would make them reduce their rates. Plus they would not reduce their rates when they don't have any competition.

The concept that GTV and Smart TV had/have is feasible, but they would need to provide better quality service. The concept included penetrating the market (market skimming) and then offering a customised PPV package i.e. you only subscribe to the channels you are interested it, but subject to a minimum subscription fee! Would have (and can still) work wonders in gaining market share!

Don't forget that there a number of cable services providers from Zuku to Star technologies to the walalos in South C!

Wonder why they have not tried other ways like using third parties as carriers like say ZUKU, Safaricom, Airtell, Orange etc to increase this penetration rate. GTV tried it with ZUKU just before they went burst. The Satellite equipment setup fees is a major deterrent to people signing onto DSTV.
