The tricky part with faiba is the 30days expiry period for their data bundles. They should extend it to 90 days The idea is to keep you buying on a regular basis. A subscription model. I am a-ok with the 30-day bundles if I can buy 120 Gb [mobile data] for 4k compared to what I currently pay Airtel and Safcom. What sold me is the "mobile" data bundle vs Safcom's unlimited @home package which can only be used at home... I think "mobile" data is a better deal as we are out of the house for most of the day. That said, different strokes for different folks. Competition is a good thing! @semaj - I checked my airtel line but I didn't see the package you mentioned. Please post a link to the offer. The package is available on the 4G simcard, which is currently available only when you buy the 4G router Is this a "wifi" router like the "mifi" device? In other words, is it a mobile device? Thanks! Asante! I will check it out. I also plan to see what Faiba offers. Faiba is cheaper than Airtel but Airtel does have a greater range/service. I find Airtel to be slow and on 3G and EDGE. I have no experience with Faiba but they do advertise LTE. I will continue with Safcom but I can buy bigger bundles on Airtel/Faiba... Zuku is dead at this rate! Greedy when others are fearful. Looks like Airtel and Faiba are selling Huawei made devices which one may be able to use either simcard from the two providers. This is because the two devices can operate on LTE band 28 (700MHz) which on which 4g is rolled out. While Telkom have opted for Alcatel linkzone mw41 devices which can also operate on 700MHz. The service from all the three should be true 4g The custom branding suggests the devicees may be locked to the respective mobile operators. Which will not take long for a way around to be found. Live and learn; and don’t forget, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

If Airtel would leverage on their infrastructure and rollout 4g with a greater focus on data, we would be headed for very interesting times as the consumers. Safaricom would be forced to innovate further. However as it is, Faiba will focus on some major towns and with that fall to same fate that befell Kencell. Good product hindered by poor coverage which leads to low revenue which is inconsistent. Live and learn; and don’t forget, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

It is not because those in the remote areas or the villages do not need or cannot afford the services. They have been ignored. Opening up these so called remote areas would lead to other opportunities which are beneficial not just for the companies but for all. Oh and the demand in the villages is there with the number of smart phones that are circulating there. E.g if one was able to Skype or even video call with the folks in the village, how many goats would have been spared this holiday season? The biggest beneficiary would be the education system. It is still very troubling to think of the number of schools which have no internet connection even with several digital programmes rolled out Competing in the limited urban space has diminishing rate of returns for the telco companies as the only viable way to compete is through price wars without increasing the client base. Surely devolution has helped spread some of the people who would've been motivated to stay in the traditional urban areas to the more remote areas. These provide at least a guaranteed client base all over the country. Live and learn; and don’t forget, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
