Quote:Given the American definition, one needs to get the wage distribution data. From the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, then mathematically the middle class can be defined as anyone earning between Kshs 8,000 ($100) and Kshs 25,000 ($314) dollars per month. This translates to an earnings range of Kshs 96,000 ($1,200) and Kshs 300,000($3,750) per annum. http://futurecapitalkeny...o-are-middle-class.html
Now everyone in Wazua may belong to the Upper class!!! Quote:Now to answer the journalists, from the analysis, it's true that the middle class is growing. However the middle class they have in mind is totally different from the middle class that actually exists. The middle class they have in mind are the people who earn more than Kshs 100,000 per month, have a car and take their kids to private schools. A vision clearly influenced by western societies through the television. On the ground the middle class is in stark contrast to what they envision. The middle class will not offer the captive market for the exorbitantly priced houses in the leafy suburbs, instead, they will ensure that a developer who puts up apartments in Kikuyu, Kinoo, Kahawa Sukari and Ruiru will have a captive market for his rental income. A cursory look at history shows that class hasn't always been about money. And some say modern history is about the 'middle class' rising.
Thinking about it, I'd say the middle class is an ideology that avoids both nobility and peasantry. It is the 'mean'.
It is an idea that loves uniformity, and is mainly concerned with wearing masks.
I have never envied the middle class: at first I thought it was because I had read 'Babbit' as a child. But now I know it's such a vain thing to be 'middle class'! Moreover, it is so politically and spiritually irresponsible! Look at our art, religion, philosophy? The middle class is a shame.
But maybe this is 'how it was meant to be'.

I think basically anyone who can afford not to live in the slums but on the hand can't afford to live in Muthaiga, Runda etc is middle class. Walalalalala..... from previous definitions, i didnt even need to read twice.. nimejiona pap!! kanyumba kakurent, outskirts za Jiji.... JALOPY! ....Jalopy? woishe my humble KA* is indeed a Jalopy im a spit away from category:poor? Yaani umaskini iko hapa na hapa na mimi..doesnt take much: just a single glance & i fall into category poor? lets do this... lets create a special class and lump the Ndegwas & Kenyattas there.. then we split Upperclass into upper and lower.. move current uppermid to upper class & create new group describing lower upper.. kisha everybody else remaining moves a step up.. Hivyo hata mimi nihepe 'one glance behind to poverty'. Maskini add them more groups eg Hohehahe, hobelahobela...chakari i know its late, but if we pass my motion above into bill; nobody will lynch us... ...i vote aye lol thirded! ...the Aye,s have it @poundfoolish where do guys who have a car year of manufacture 94 and makes so much noise when you are on a rough road, you,d think you are on a wheelbarrow, the AC has to be on to prevent overheating somehow, the car just nywesed kidogo it would be having a carburettor, insurance kama kawa ni 3rd party...hii nitakuwa class gani? My brother the only thing keeping you in the middle class is the notion of a payslip, at the end of every 30 moon cycles.. otherwise just grub a seat here --> _/ with the rest of us, the Walalahoi.. The situation is heavily precarious haki ya nani.. and i'm heavy on 'basic debts'. Basic debts here are food (deni kwa mama mboga ya nyanya mbili kitunguu na Sukumawiki two leafs, & a dhania.. why the heck did i take those dhanias..? Thats 10bob debt added. Then due to the Jalopy i used i had to pass by Kimani's, the local shop, and DEBT AGAIN Pap! Panadols mbili.. No sooner do i turn than the Mutura ya bao pare kwa Mutua i had swallowed to add flavour to the Kales i'll cook decided to turn in my stomack as well. so Eno=15/- debt. I see guys here being discouraged from car loans.. I cant make it a month without Basic Debts.. food, fare, rent, Ming'aro za Oti Toi mkt Actually i'm so indebted that i even breath cautiously.. I cant breath heavily. I'm afraid if i take even just one, big, deep breath.. I will be declared bankrupt! lets have more 'ayes..' we need to lift our status. Na @jaggernaut should be reprimanded and castigated and condemned in strong terms for blatantly 'describing us so vividly in the public odium' we try to live and keep our heads up despite our debts up there. Ask those who know me, esp folks in Machinani.. *breaks into wails*
