Kenyans love a bargain. They embraced Equity when the likes of Barclays were closing branches and insisting on 20K (or was 50K?) minimum balance, made the bank a roaring success.
There was genuine interest to take up the sim and thin sim. Equity has just very badly screwed this up, its not loyalty to the green giant that is to blame here.
Bright side: Some relief came to Mpesa customers.
A flip side: Other banks already felt threatened, Safaricom felt threatened. That would have removed stumbling blocks to collaboration just so as to counter Equity running away with everybody's lunch. A meaner, deeper, more integrated, harder to best Mpesa beast would have emerged. It would have been fascinating to watch.
