Well call me crazy but while on thika highway I always prefer to hug the middle lanes. that way should anything happen, then i have two options:- move to the right lane or to the left lane. i consider sticking to the extreme left a risk because of drivers who just enter into the main highway blindly. look at the situation at KU from clayworks side. Matatu drivers use the service lane (outer lane) to avoid the bump at clayworks then join the main highway just before the KU stage at crazy speeds hence endangering those already on the main highway and keeping to the extreme left. Matatus keep stopping to pick and drop passengers on the main highway and most vehicles that break down will usually be stopped on that last lane. Let me not mention those lorries carrying construction stones that use them as handbrakes then leave them on that last lane. I avoid the extreme right for almost the same reason. There was a morning that I almost hit a guard rail that had bent excessively into my lane after a previous nights serious accident. All said and done... mimi nitakatalia katikati unless when required otherwise

@Prime - Have you seen that part just after Allsops on your way towards Thika - just before the demolished Nakumatt? The fellow who designed the road must have thought Kenyan drivers are Sunday School teachers! Traffic from service lane joins the main super highway on a down hill section - most vehicles rarely stop! At that section I stick to the outer lane. I've seen two vehicles joining the main super highway at the same time several times! The vehicle in front joins the first lane while the driver of the vehicle behind - normally the route 45 buses - decides not to be 'delayed' by the vehicle in front and directly joins the second lane. At that time you are cruising downhill on the first lane and all over sudden two vehicles from 'nowhere' join the highway and occupy your lane and the one next to you. Woe unto you if you are moving at a far much higher speed than the two vehicles and there are other vehicles on the other lanes which means you can't swerve. I have seen very bad accidents at that point!

And then there are vehicles - especially trucks - that stall especially at night and the bloody driver just leaves it there with no life savers, hazard or anything to show there is a stalled vehicles ahead. And sometimes the vehicle is left on the outer lane! You go up an over pass at 110km/h at night and as you begin your decent, bum!, stalled lorry with no warning signs! Even me - especially at night - I feel safer on the middle lane!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

@Prime/@MaichBlack, I have to say I like your attitude. Basic horse sense and user discretion should never be superseded by blind regard for the law.

@Prime/@MaichBlack/@seppuku it hink this is the best model....

Truth be told, I also use middle lane if total lanes are more than 2.
I use left when there are only 2 lanes, when the road ahead of me is clear (read "no matatu"). But I shift to right lane immediately I see a matatu in front, overtake and shift again to the left lane. Otherwise, I stick to right lane and maintain topmost speed on that section to avoid obstructing anyone who might want to overtake.

RULE OF THUMB
I don't follow a lorry or matatu.
I don't allow lorry or matatu to trail me too close.
I indicate on time
I check my rear mirror before I brake
I avoid driving too closely together with other cars on high-speed highway

MaichBlack. I have been rear ended on that stretch by a Nyeri mat. I had slowed down to check the main highway only for a mat to nyorosha me from behind and claim that he thought I had joined the road. He was busy consulting his side mirror only to realize I was right there. he swerved but left a horrible dent on the back left of my car. For low cars, the side mirror is not of too much help because it is almost the same level as the rails. Visibility is much better for higher vehicles. The overgrown grass is also becoming a hindrance when moving out of the main highway. One just has to slow down. Unlike before when you would check way earlier and just move out at speed. But I think that grass looks good. It doesnt spread.

I'm tired of fixing broken limbs and necks with screws, plates, nails, bolts and nuts due to "carelessness" and "clever reasoning" on the highway.

Why can't Kenyan drivers just follow the rules on the road?

Kenyans should travel to other countries (like Germany) and see how drivers behave on the highway (Autobahn). No speed limits and fewer accidents. You cruise at 160kph-200kph in your Mercedes Benz E250 from Dusseldorf to Munich (630km) and arrive in 3.5hrs, SAFELY.
Set out to correct the world's wrongs and you will most certainly wind up adding to them.

Yes, the 45 buses are the worst , they claim that you ought to see them and stop , they do not even brake when joining
