@AlphDoti - The last time I checked KU was in problems with the Engineering Board for starting Engineering courses without a single qualified lecturer in the areas of specialization, no labs etc. Did they ever sort that out? And how serious is their Computer Science program? KU have a habit of combining classes across departments - even practical oriented units - totally compromising quality!! You might end up with a class of 350 students being taught JAVA with a microphone!!! Do some investigation on these before choosing KU.

I've heard of this & been wondering how its practically possible. Quite acceptable esp for JAB tho, where they pay less than 30k a year!

OMG, which public uni is better now?

University of Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta still have very solid courses and structures.

Dedan Kimathi University [Main University. I have no idea about the campuses] although young is very serious! The former principal [I don't know if he has been made the V.C. yet], Proffesor Kioni is one serious academician and it trickles down to the other staff.

While at it, how you great Wazuans think about this selection with mean grade of A- (AVG 80)?
1. First selection
a). UON - BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (Computer Science) (47.1)
b). JKUAT - BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (Computer Science) (46.8)
c). KU - BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (Computer Science) (46.5)
2. Second selection: MOI - BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (Electrical and Telecomm. Eng.) (46.5)
3. Third selection: JKUAT - Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBIT) (45.6)
4. Fourth selection: KU - Bachelor of Science (Energy Engineering) (43.7)

She has 45.9 points if you use trhe JAB calculations, thereby may miss on Comp Scie. See it here... JAB Procedure

@AlphDoti & @Bree - Machinani Universities [University colleges] are far much cheaper than the established ones. Meru university of Science and Technology for example will charge you 55k for a course you'll have to cough approximately 90k at JKUAT or UON. Living expenses [house/hostel, food, miraa Laughing out loudly etc.] will also be far much cheaper for your kid. But I cannot assure you on the quality and exposure your kid will get. Hapo research ni kwako lakini zingine ni kama tu ka-college.

CAUTION: avoid K.U, Egerton and MMUST for all engineering courses. to date, neither E.B.K( formely E.R.B) nor I.E.K has accredited them. they have a court case and former students are the ones suffering. THEY CANT GET REGISTERED!!!

On other related matter, I have noted in atleast 3 universities, most of students taking BCOM avoid accounting specialization in 3rd year.
Finance option has become very common. I 'd however advise it is better to appreciate to prepare FS [as per accounting option] before they embark on analysing FS to assist in decision making on Financing, Dividend,Investment and Working capital management [Finance option]

@Ilikeyou most people do not take Bcom (Accounting option) simply because one does not qualify as an accountant with this option.. In fact it is illegal to employ this person as an auditor or a tax accountant!

Most students who want to be accountants take the professional course ie ACCA/CPA and then proceed to join Bcom exempt in 3rd year and opt for the finance options to avoid wasting money on duplication!

This girl got an A- in KCSE 2012 & is very keen on taking Bachelor of Economics & Statistics course at UoN/KU.
I have researched on the course, what it entails and possible career positions, but I found it a bit vague.

Please advice if it’s best to go ahead, why and what will she become after graduating 4yrs later.

Where will she get her internship, job? & the overall question, is it good as a career choice?

I would advise her to take Bachelor of Commerce @ UoN - Business School. In her 3rd year, she can either decide to specialize in Business Information Systems, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Management Science etc. This degree generally offers a wide range of career possibilities than Economics & Statistics...add few certifications and you can do anything. actually you will find lots of Statistics with Bcomm-Management Science

The highlighted should be your guiding statement. If this is what she is really interested in, the rest are details. If you feel that she is making this choice out of lack of information or other influences, take time to seek out a career adviser and introduce her to him/her ...then let them talk freely without you applying pressure or influence.
Don't worry about this too much. She is young, this is an evolving Kenya with options diversifying everyday - she can correct career mis-steps in the future without too much loss unlike our generation where you needed to choose very carefully.
