All metaphors you guys have of life on earth are thrown out of the window! Life if any on Mars will be different!! I think the very concept of development of what looks like our DNA and/or RNA as is here on a different planet is very unlikely. The double helix developing on earth was nothing short of miraculous. The 1st RNA would have required a molecule between 200 and 300 nucleotides in length - ok. But the odds of specifying, say, 250 nucleotides in an RNA molecule by chance is about 1 in 10 power 150 -- below the "universal probability bound," a term characterising events whose occurrence is at least remotely possible within the history of the universe.
10 power 150 is a large number even under the conditions we thought we had a couple of billion years ago. So forget the cockroaches and small animals. if we can get anything there it should be in the structure of viruses... protein sheaths with some form of organic replicating mechanisms.
Curiosity is the size of a small SUV (9feet long)
that is slower than a tortoise and Mars has a surface area of about 38% of earth - right? earths surface is 70% water and so the area of Mars at your disposal is larger than basically all the dry landmass on all continents on earth! In making the decision where to land it! You need to make a bet... right... so the question you would need to ask yourself is "where on Mars would life possibly occur IF IT WERE TO OCCUR?" So yeah... as is curiosity is basically looking for Organic molecules.... Organic molecules that would combine to make Nucleotides that would later combine to be some complex replicating molecule that would get a protein sheath around it.... it's a stretch but it's possible. Remember my other post on possibility of aliens looking like what we do?
Crazy probabilities but the universe is broad...an analogy on how broad the universe is if earth is a basketball - the moon would be a tennis ball 24 feet away! the sun would be a house 1.75 miles away! and the nearest star?..... 800,000kms AWAY FROM THE BASKET BALL.... 2 times the distance to the moon..... THAT IS THE SCALE OF SPACE!
and has been around for a long long time an another analogy - is if the total time the universe has been around can
be compressed to 1 year.... and if today was midnight december 31st - everyone you now appeared in the last seconds of that day!
December 31, 23:59:46 - humans invented writing.
So - maybe... just maybe!
