MJ of Safcom advert in the dailies confirmed that they are already connected to the Seacom cable. However we are still not getting broadband on Ngong road.

It will take another 4 weeks (1 Sep) to get better speeds for all. KDN,safcon,Access are all testing the cable. Connecting. And all that jazz. Some areas are getting better speeds since they are home to safcon execs, big clients, govt officials... the rest of us will have to wait. _____ If you are waiting for lower charges... utangoja... till 2010.

@Djinn and @wa P

I agree with you guys Safaricom nees to get much more serious and emulate other Kenyan companies:

1. I remember with nostalgia when KP&T use to provide good mobile service to 25,000 guys in few areas of Nairobi only and installed phone booths, one per location,to allow us to talk to our relatives
2. Look at how friendly Nairobi Water answer customer service when you inquire why there's been no water for the whole weekend
3. Or how quickly KPLC restores connection every time there's a unexpected blackout
4. And how well KQ keep their word [on-time departures] these days,72% of the time last month

Safaricom should aspire to be:
5. as inclusive as Equity with her large customer base of 3.5 million customers
6. more like EABL our largest corporate by capitalisation that pays tribute to our recreation
7. contribute as much as Nakumatt and our other large taxpayers for development
8. at a minimum,as innovative as the banking industry in banking our poor

9. Or as reliable as UUNET,AccessKenya,Africa Online,Wananchi et all in their 10 year quest to connect us to the wired world
10. Or as empowering and transparent as KQ when shares were floated in 1996 at 11.25/= and brought a staggering 110,000 people to NSE.

IF ONLY WE GAVE ALL COMPANIES IN KENYA AS HAD A RAP,WE WOULD ACHIEVE VISION 2030 MUCH FASTER.

@Djinn. Truth well told. Very well told.
There is a lot of misconception about this under-sea fiber project. The actual cable does transmit date/voice/video fast but what if you still have an old school comp/server/router...you shan't be able to experience this new wave. The ISp one uses too matter. they are known to 'choke' the bandwidth so they can sell alot less bandwidth to more people. And,these benefit everyone is talking about won't really come soon. prices won't go down as envisaged. The telcos industry requires heavy investments and is currently the fastest growing industry...what they will be doing in the next few years is re-investing onto their networks/infrastructure and/or re-couping their investments. Most of these guys have invested billions in TEAMs/EASSY/SEACOMM.
Additionally, and with confidence i know KDN is the only company that 'sambazaing' seacomm within the country. They are duly connected as of now. Acces K. and SafCom has tapped into their network to get the connection. Mark you, safcoms base stations, most of them, are connected by KDNs fiber - that why there is little congestion nowadays and that how they were able to launch 3G and now broadband.

Asanteni.

@Chris - the Orange person says 'we are using the predecessor of 3G which is EDGE and is also much faster' - NOPE! EDGE came BEFORE 3G and is 2.5G (like CDMA) but is not faster than 3G (HSDPA) Your Orange guy is wrong....or being patronising.

So far,no one has convinced me that they are enjoying the benefits of the fibre cable yet.

tusker8,.. where did you get the info that KDN is offering fibre connection thro seacom yet? i've just spoken to someone from KDN,they say EARLIEST connection is next week. The are stilll doing some configurations plus also connecting to some equipment in SA. Plus i here there equipment that hasn't landed at KDN sites yet. Customers are lined up at KDN offices asking why they are not on Seacom yet.

People, please don't confuse between fibre connection within the country,(that has been there for a while) and fibre connection to the outside world
Please dont confuse between high speeds connecting to local content (e.g. stockskenya.com) and accessing international servers. Please see the post by Djinn
For example,i ping KDN at a crazy 50 Mb/s but international servers for a something like 5Mb/s or even less than 1Mb/s . see the links below.

I have also heard that at the moment. safcom is not directly using KDN to connect to seacom. KDN is only providing the infrastructure but not their network. Thus, they are able to connect to seacom. they are not experiencing the delays that KDN is experiencing.
