So how many real customers do the rest have?

The report is back....i think they want to cripple Safaricom and have another company take a huge chunk of the market share.
They recommend Mpesa to be a different company by just having different offices and staff. This increases the costs of business. I dont even see the importance of this.

That was very easy money for Anasysys Mason

What does this mean Laughing out loudly

Although it has not accused Safaricom of abuse of dominance, it notes that preferential treatment given to Safaricom partners such as the Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) and the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) could be deemed uncompetitive.

I thought almost all banks are connected to MPESA?

Government is in the business of consumer protection. The advent of liberalization brought about capitalism in provision of important services search us communication, energy etc, it is the government's responsibility to ensure universality in communication and hence must put policies that project this agenda. Market dominance leads to anti-competitive behavior and the consumer must be protected.

But the govt should not start punishing success & innovation (Ksh30bn a year capital expenditure is nothing small). They all have had an equal playing field since the start. Now the lazy one (AIRTEL!!!!) wants to be given a free customers and revenue without bringing anything to the table. They have a huge financial backing from the parent company so rolling out infrastructure should be soooooo easy.
Airtel should work for its share of the pie like Equitel has done, not complain that Safaricom should be restricted in all directions so that it can take over its customers

Sometimes you hear things that almost bring tears to your eyes.

Safaricom is big ?? Compared to who ? The dinosaurs at Airtel and orange ?

In Africa, safcom is nowhere near the telcos in the big boys club. MTN, Glomobile, Orascom....

I think Kenyans have become so accustomed to mediocrity that a thriving business is seen as abnormal and needs to be brought down.

I don't understand. These are two different services but interlinked. The other mobile operators offer the same services but customers choose not to go with them. Even the mobile number migration failed to weaken them. I think this is unfair unless if the reason is security and regulation.

BBI will solve it

Punishing Safaricom for building M-Pesa into a giant is silly. They all started from the same premise/level but one innovated. #ThisIsKenya

Safaricom chief executive Bob Collymore, who is typically reticent in his public comments, said this: "It sends a really worrying message to international investors in investing in the country ... It would imply that this is no longer a safe place."

This comment was made in response to the leak of a report commissioned by Kenya's telecoms regulator which allegedly recommends breaking Safaricom up into separate telecoms and financial services businesses because the firm is too dominant. Safaricom has 26 million subscribers, and of course its innovative M-Pesa mobile money platform.

"It's a malicious act to leak such a damaging report without first consulting or at least sharing it with us," Collymore told Reuters.
