Decent housing for someone who is single @ 35k? Kwani anaishi wapi? A very good 1bd unit in Ruaka is 15k.
What a wicked man I am!The things I want to do,I don't do.The things I don't want to do I find myself doing

One thing not often talked about is Self Discipline. You can have the opportunity at your feet. But you must make the mental transition from being an employee (told what to do) to an owner. On paper, it sounds simple. In reality though, the new found independence can be the very thing that destroys your business.

I left heading the finance team of one of the local banks last year in October to go into developing and selling customized software.

The last 6 months have been the best of my life. Ive gone on 2 cheap(less than 15k) holidays to Mombasa and malindi, I go to the gym every day from 2pm - 3.30pm, I pick my kids from school at 3.30 and am their swimming coach from 4pm - 5.30pm.

Also, I watch Fresh Prince of Bel Air every morning at 9.30am on DSTV.

For me, although my new business (software) is not yet up, I have another which is. I am not able to do big things like buy property or even finish the house I am building, but at least I can fuel my car , pay school fees and eat until my new business is up.

As someone said, you need to either have several months of savings, a running business or very marketable skills such that should you need to go back to work it wont take 2 months to get a job.

You might find this useful:

My grandfather used to tell about a country lad who went to the big city to seek his fortune, but had no luck finding a job. One day, wandering through the red light district, he spotted a Help Wanted sign in a window.

They were looking for a bookkeeper, but after the madam quizzed the boy about his education and discovered that he could neither read or write, she turned him away.

Feeling sorry for him, she gave him two big red apples as he left. A few blocks down the street, he placed the apples on top of a garbage can while tying his shoe, and a stranger came along and offered to buy them.

The boy took the money to a produce market and bought a dozen more apples, which he sold quickly. Eventually he parlayed his fruit sales into a grocery store, then a string of supermarkets. Eventually he became the wealthiest man in the state.

Finally he was named Man of the Year, and during an interview a journalist discovered that his subject could neither read or write.

"Good Lord, Sir," he said. "What do you suppose you would have become if you had ever learned to read and write?"

"Well," he answered, "I guess I would have been a bookkeeper."
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

Pablo congrats! This is how life should be lived and I feel inspired. We have so many people earning over 300K a month from employment income....but most don't have family time.Sometimes it can get so bad your own kids might start calling you "Uncle"!
Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

Imagine your kids asking you "Uncle, why do you come when daddy leaves"

BBI will solve it

A friend of mine had a nasty experience because of this work manenos.

He was very busy to the extent that for a week or so he continuously left the house by 5:00am and went back at around 11:00pm. For a whole week he did not see his kids!

The following weekend [Sunday], his in-laws were visiting them. The kids went to church while my friend was still in bed. When they came back, they really never got a chance to talk. You can imagine his horror later, when his daughter, in front of everyone, asked him "Daddy mbona siku hizi haukujagi home?"
