everyone needs to be objective here...Wanjiru could be taking advantage of the situation and forcing the old man to say stuff coz to me he looks very senile..(not necessarily mad)
The kids could also be taking advantage of the fathers status and pushing Wanjiru out...so what option does she have.....lock them out of course..and rigth there bad blood between the two parties develop...
After this, it is kila mtu kaguu niponye niponyeke na as much as possible..
The mzee becomes neglected and acts as a pawn for all these parties...

This brings me to the bigger question of succession planning which seems to be lacking in the African culture. Maybe it stems from declarations made in this country during the 1970s where it is treasonable to even imagine the death of a mkubwa.

We have numerous cases where the patriarch passes on and the empire he so painstakingly built is dismantled by the first generation offspring. This is also the case in many businesses where the founder carries the vision to the grave.

Should we not as Africans seriously re-look at succession planning and matters of inheritance? Who says that the kids or wives have to run the businesses directly or property be distributed amongst the family members. This is the reason why in certain parts of this country, the land is subdivided to the point where it cannot even sustain subsistence farming. At this rate we will soon have large slums in upcountry locations in future generations.

If I was this Kirima man, I would establish a trust of sorts for the dependents/descendants and outsource the management of my companies to competent individuals with the right checks and balances of course. I think Philip Ndegwa has done this admirably with the First Chartered Securities Limited.

On this note, @ vinii, it doesn't mean when you pata more money, you marry many wives, inaleta shida kama hizi. Maybe it is wise to have many kids with the same wife with such millions
