Thanks all for your advice, unfortunalty, a few people have it in for me on this forum, they either think I'm a Nigerian Scammer or a Local car dealer.

Anyway, before I depart from this forum as I'm obviously not welcome, I'm completely torn between buying locally and importing
I've got approx 10.5USD 7GBP thousand to spend, and the forrester looks cheap, and seems ok

Is importing that much cheaper? i.e. will I save 500USD or more like 2,5000 USD

if the savings are huge, i'll go for an import
if they are marginal, i'll look locally

@mr davies Please stay awhile...

With what you have to spend, you should be able to afford the forester easily.

10500k USD is what you have for the entire amount for the vehicle (unless you are tax exempt)

I would also consider importing from the UK now that you are there...

10.500USD is all i have for car, import duty, tax etc etc

Importing from the UK would be ideal, as i can check out the car first!

I'm not tax exempt as i'm a UK citizen, i think you're only exempt if you have been abroad for a year and you've owned the car for 3 months and your a kenyan citizen and are bringing it back.
feel free to correct me though

Could i import the car, with a view to exporting it when i'm leaving or is that not allowed?

I've just sold one car, but it was far too low to bring to kenya
My wifes one isn't sold yet, so theoretically we could bring that and not have to pay duty?

However, its a 2001 and I read someone you aren't allowed to bring something over thats lower than 7 years old?

If thats the case I'm stuffed as you need to have owned the car for a year.

Let me know your thoughts

For ~10k USD it would be insufficient to import and pay the local taxes for a forestor. Unfortunately, the cumulative taxes in Kenya are rather high. Can account for 75% of the CIF value.

It might be a good idea to purchase a vehicle when in country.

it's all relative I guess, any purchase will also be very high (compared to uk) and these import duties just drive the cost of cars up

Interesting to hear the opinion on Subaru. Subaru is a great car you only need to know how to service it and it will serve you for a very long period. The funny thing is how people compare its spare parts with toyota's. The Subaru parts outlets i know in kenya sell genuine parts which lasts for very long. Toyota maintenance appear cheap because of the Taiwan aftermarkets readily available however visit toyota kenya or any other genuine toyota parts shop and compare the prices you'll be shocked.

I think it depends on what you want from the car: If you prefer driving pleasure and the car is for keeps, a Subaru is good option. Service is a bit expensive - I have one - first major service after purchase came to about 40K (plugs, filters, oil, fanbelts,mounting bearings and other things). The parts do last. Resale value can drop by 30->50% from what I see on boards. As for an XTrail, driven one, handling felt a bit funny, like walking on platform shoes or something, spaceous, good for a family especially on trips out of Nairobi, don't know about resale value.
For a solid car that can move quickly in case you need the cash without losing too much, go for a Toyota (Kluger looks nice and formidable and is not too common).
A word about the RAV4. An acquaintance was car jacked at gun point huko sides za pipeline and described how he had been tracked by the thugs because one of them made a call and actually said that they had 'gotten an even newer car' ...meaning that they had been on the outlook for a RAV4. It may be an isolated case but I wouldn't buy that car.

Service is expensive but the parts do last. it will be more than 2 or even 3+ years before you can think of changing the timing belt and other major replacements take for instance subaru Iridium plugs will go for as many as 3 Services and few thugs will think of stealing your car anyway some lil peace of mind
