The other thing I noticed with the set box is that not all channels have gone digital e.g. Kiss Tv and CNBC are not available, it indicates it's an encrypted program. I like HBO (nice old 21st century movies all with subtitles)though all the commercials are Indian and come after every few minutes!

I'm moving to a place with no aerial attached to the wall socket so will try out and see how well it works without a properly mounted aerial.

@ smano - You cannot get those signals without installing an aerial. i guess you better start looking for one!

I heard that KBC is working on pay channels probably by end of may and will introduce smart cards to be used to view the pay channels. i wonder what will happen to DSTV and the likes coz KBC will certanly be cheaper!

Digitali;
Is this the normal aerial or it is a special kind of aerial?

@Magigi. i did not change my aerial and neither did i call anybody to tune it for me. I just connected the damn thing and it picked the signals with the my old aerial intact!

@Digitali, true to your word, once I moved to my new place I couldn't receive the signal. Not because there was no aerial, but coz it never used to get minimally clear signals for any of the normal channels!

Anyway, with Dstv one does not really need the setbox for now. I wonder if you place the Dstv smart card in the smart box compartment for the setbox to view Dstv channels in digital. Digitali, any experience with that?

I got my set top box from spatial systems, kimathi hse 3rd floor on sato, the guy i found was so helpful and answered all my questions.

Actually with the set top box (digital Tv) you can actually know which programs will be showing in every channel when, and you can also lock out some channels if you dont want the children to view such channels. And the yes the clarity of all the channels is super am actually spoilt for choice.

I gather KBC will be charging as low as Ksh 200 per month for extra channels which include MTV, super sports etc....

Football lovers had better grab the Set top box before June world cup!

@smano: Did you have the aerial properly tuned to get the best position to receive the digital signals? the digital signals are now covering a radius of about 100KM from Nairobi and i believe you're within this radius so you should get this clearly.

Anyway, since you have DSTV, you may not need the decoder although you loose out on the free channels which are not on DSTV.

your question about the use of DSTV smart card on the Set top box is a no! the two decoders use diffrent technology, the DSTV signals are setelite wherereas the other decoder is terestrial meaning that the signals are on air! hence the terrestrial decoder cannot receice settelite signals.

I also understand that latest May this year KBC will unveil pay channels through their smart card which will be reasonable to guys with packages of about 12 channels going for as little as 200 bob, an aditional 12 channels for another 200 bob etc.
