Is plunder legal?
No & that is exactly my point. We worry about non issues, while lengairing the issues we need to deal with. We concentrate our energies in the wrong direction.
It is not worrying. It is about the nature of human beings to have moral feelings about anything. You might not have them against homosexuals but many people do and society has to contend with the moral repugnance not of the act itself but of the fact that a majority of the population feel it. The fabric of society is woven with thousands of these repugnancies that people accept as just the way things are and they make every society what it is.
Even the most liberal and irreligious people have some moral boundaries that they would not cross. Here is an example: Man is married to a woman when they are both 19. They have a son. They are a loving family. When they reach 40 the son is 21. Son is single. Man dies. Woman is sad and devastated. Son does not like to see his mother sad so he is always there to console her. Soon they start having sex but they are careful to use a condom to avoid any kind of inbreeding. What is wrong with this scenario? They are both adults. No one is cheating on the other. They are providing support to each other. No one is taking advantage of the other. They are taking precautions so that they don't have any kind of inbreeding. What rational argument is there that tells you that this is not right? Yet everybody reading this will know down in their bones that this is wrong. It is a moral feeling that most people have.
Now,
it is possible that this moral feelings about anything, including the one in the above example can be diminished in time by having more and more people committing the act and over a period of time it becomes common place. There are thousands of these things in any one society and that is what makes them different. People are not being unreasonable when they find certain behaviors objectionable. People should understand themselves and the societies in which they live and find harmony in their coexistence.
You are right! the reason why we feel "in our bones" when we hear of matapakas could result from 2 reasons (or a combination of both)
1) We had a group of people who were wired to committing incest and they ended up creating some inbred weaklings. Folks that were somehow naturally disgusted with that whole concept ended up with stronger individuals. The Stronger individuals survived better and got more mates and passed down their genes that got repulsed at these incestuous relationships.
2) Perhaps we all have it in us and that after realizing that if people engaged in incest we ended up creating a narrative and thus we have been passing down this narrative. In this case “it’s wrong” simply because WE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT IT'S BAD.
3) Perhaps it’s a mix of the 2 – we have it in our genes (some of us) and we have kept it at by our narratives. When the inbreds or homosexuals died off – we created a narrative that their act pissed off someone divine and he wiped them off the face of the earth.
It’s true that even the most liberal of us have been taught something. Even the most liberal are conservatives to something. That's how it works - the reason we can have moral feelings about things diminish is because morals don't exist on their own. they are not ingrained in us... not like the need for an infant to clutch onto a nipple or cry when hungry. we are taught most things. But we need to understand that these things - the ones that make us feel repulsed or attracted to things are actually taught to us - they are by no means useless or a nuisance... not all of them at least. Perhaps a good question to ask is
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE GOT RID OF THESE ASPECTS OF OUR MORALS?
when we live in a world of... matapakas? and everyone is OK with it? In the same way Indians marry their cousins and ancient Egyptians married their sisters and brothers. What would be the negative outcome?
