Point of correction @MoneyMonger @Mainat. Its not UBA that is looking for a buyout but Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Nigeria’s largest lender by market value. To add, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc is looking to acquire a mid size bank with a presence in KE, Tz, Ug. Only 3 mid size banks have a presence in the all the said countries 1. NIC 2. DTB (also in Burundi) 3. BOA
The only other mid size Banks with a regional presence that they could consider are: 1. CBA (in KE & Tz) 2. Fina (in KE, Ug & Rw) 3. I&M Bank (in KE, Tz, Rw, Mauritius) 4. Imperial Bank (in KE & Ug) 5. ABC (in KE & Ug)

Kigeugeu Ndegwa's have made a U-Turn again on the matter of their shareholding in NIC. They have been buying the shares from market between Oct and March. Their shareholding now stands at the maximum allowed threshold of 25% #AmaIkoKitu¿ >>> http://www.businessdailyafrica....6/-/h03qu9z/-/index.html

Many thanks for the correction and further insight! There is nothing as dangerous as an Idea, when there is only one Idea

BOA is probably out since it is much larger ex-EAC so GTB would be buying much more including a substantial presence in West Africa. NIC - Hmmm. The UG operation is greenfield & small. DTB - Aga Khan to sell a well-managed, strong & fast growing flagship firm which supports other AKFED investments including NMG, TPSEA, Jubilee, etc? Not likely. Never say never! CBA - Makes sense as it can become 'regional' but it's a price game. And one of the shareholders is now Rais. Fina - Hmmm. Big in Rwanda. I&M - Unlikely with the recent expansion into Rwanda. And the listing to come soon via City Trust. Imperial - ? ABC - ? What about Chase? Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

Article quotes CEO saying "acquire banks in Kenya, Ug" et al. If it was a regional bank, would go for Fina. Otherwise, definitely go for a controlling stake in NBK Sehemu ndio nyumba

Notice only 12 'local' banks have regional footprint. Apart from the 8 mid size banks mentioned above, the other 4 are big size banks - KCB, Equity, Coop & CFC

How about NSSF having to comply with RBA statutory portfolio mix requirements, which in turn points to reducing public equity exposure? NSSF has bigger plans now and proceeds from NBK could go toward achieving such ends: http://www.nation.co.ke/...58/-/6glqun/-/index.html

Hmmm, I think GTB should buy out I&M Bank before it 'lists' ... As is CTL is suspended until 19 April so it would not disrupt much if GTB announced an interest in I&M... And I&M Bank will not trade as I&M Holdings until 19th June. Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

Don't know how the dynamic duo know about the NSE, but if I was them, NBK divestiture would be on the cards this year. Can this GTB afford I&M? This is the 5 or 6th largest banking group in Kenya. The Mauritius associate alone would be pretty expensive. In any case, it'd be akin to entering a buyout contest with City Trust. Sehemu ndio nyumba

Reverse Takeover so it's really I&M buying CTL... And I expect a 500/- price on 19th April or a creep upwards to that price. Post-split = 100/- GTB is huge as are many Nigerian banks. KCB (our largest bank) might be at most a mid-tier Nigerian bank. For GTB (also listed on the LSE) NBK or I&M are small fry. Greedy when others are fearful.
