NHIF advert on Daily Nation, 20th April:
"ALL EMPLOYERS, CONTRIBUTORS and ORGANISED GOUPS should remit the enhanced contribution rates from 1st May 2012."

I hear the new rates are based on Gross instead of Basic pay. This is introducing additional taxation through the back door. They are not even giving any relief for this NKT

They are smart! Most salaries are consolidated and basic salary comes with some ambiguity. Again the NHIF is an expense and not a saving meaning it has to be taxed. I'm not an accountant though.

but there is insurance relief for life insurance plans @15% of the premium value. This thing just aims to get additional tax for health purposes. Wapi Atwoli?

@Lolest! I think u've an arguable case. The difference in the two is that for personal policies there is sum assured in case of death and the purpose of relief is to encourage people to have policies. For nhif the gov is looking for cash through the back door!

Does the law allow NHIF to forcefully take a share of my salary without my consent? If it does then it should be amended because this to me is theft. I'd rather contribute more to NSSF and not NHIF.

NHIF need to explain to us what new benefits we're getting and if they're 6 times better as well.

BBI will solve it

But this was gonna happen one time or another...

Sources close to the source allege that the deductions will be backdated to the date when they were first published by the ministry, be sure for a shocker payslip end of February.

We are busy burying our heads in the sand, waiting for February payslip to get the shock of early 2013.
We may use this as a good political tool, we should ask the top contenders to stop this theft before we can promise to vote them in during the coming polls.
