just to ask does the sound/picture quality get any better when you use the some of these fancy cables like the optical cables, hdmi, and the rest?d'oh!

<<You should know your cables coz some are digital and others analogue>>

With the analogue cables the signal quality will vary based on what kind of cable you are using. Generally the fancier the cable the better the quality. By fancier I mean things like plated connecters, braided cabling, shielded, oxygen free etc.

With digital cables the brand name or how fancy it is doesn't really matter. With digital signals it's either an on or off with an almost insignificant change in quality. Basically with digital cabling, if it looks ok and it works...it will work just as good as a 5x more expensive cable like Monster.

Hisense seems like a new entrant into the market. I am more into traditional brands(loyalty). That said my biggest dillemma is all this addons like...hdmi, smart, i dont know what makes sense or not. My target is to buy something that will be relevant in say 8 years....

I have a home theatre which has served me well. I am actually shopping for a TV. My CRT kinda gave up today and with the kids having closed school, the foul weather limiting outdoor activities...i need one ASAP

For high end sets ...
HDMI ARC...Audio Return Channel ...check if the set you want has it (in addition to DVI,MHL and STB ..sometimes they are combined/supported into one or two ports) cause its very important for integrating to a Home theatre and many manufacturers (looking at you Samsung) take advantage of user ignorance to leave the port out.
I discovered this recently with my TV to my extreme annoyance.

Here's a checklist you could use:

1. Full HD (i.e., 1920*1080p) Ignore anything that says 'HD ready'

2. Inputs - the telly needs multiple inputs, HDMI, USB and DVI being the most important. You can also include AV inputs for backward compatibility (those red/yellow/white wires). Look for a TV with at least two of each (2 HDMI, 2 USB, etc.)

3. Smart capabilities - A unique feature, but not absolutely necessary. These days you can get a small USB device that adds smart capabilities to a 'dumb' TV. Smart TVs are usually 10-20K higher in price btw. It can also be difficult to update Smart TVs.

4. Connectivity - Aim for something that is WiFi enabled and has a LAN port.

Finally, you have to think about whether you have/will get a home theatre system. It may seem like an expense, but it adds to the viewing experience. All modern TVs are slim, which means they don't have very good speakers.
